Welps, AMD totally shot themselves in the foot with the $1,000 price tag. This product is now irrelevant. Kudos AMD, you continue to surprise me with your stupidity.

Why, because they priced it in line with nVidia's offerings? $900 would be more inline when compared to two 7970GE's, but for the people that buy these cards, $100 bucks doesnt make much of a difference.

No, the driver is in BETA, not ALPHA. And the Beta driver is available to everybody, there is ZERO reason to not use it. Every other site did.

Pcper says the driver won't be publicly available until June or July. They were provided with it last minute. Did you even read what they said?

Both of those reviews focus on fps numbers which are a total lie when talking about actual usage performance. Once the latest fixed drivers are available to the public and is tested at the user level then I can agree with some of the conclusions. It's really unfortunate that amd has so much trouble with crossfire but once things are ironed out I am sure it will be a competitive card even with the limited over clocking ability.

@ cmdrdredd,
hardwareheaven tested with fps numbers(min.,max.,avg.) as well as frame time. They also tested with Catalyst 13.5 Beta 2.They have done one of the best and extensive review for 7990 malta.

I saw that however, the conclusion is based on fps they say "AMD has work to do on frame latency" then say "AMD is ahead where it matters." No they certainly aren't.

yes the conclusion seemed a bit fuzzy, but the whole 7990 vs 690 testing is top-notch..

Yeah, I just think the reviewer should have considered more than the fps numbers in their final recommendations. Or weighed it more heavily at least. I mean, both cards give playable fps for a good experience. If one gives a less than satisfactory experience and you reference it, why is that not put out there a little bit more prominently? I would expect the same treatment for nvidia if their next card has issues.

Bingo, AMD right now isn't going into this with a good reputation. Yet they some how think they can stand on the same shelf with nVidia. Play it smart, undersell em, at least then people weigh the cost advantage.

EDIT: At a $1,000 wouldn't even look at the HD 7990, and I prefer Radeon's.

That's what pcper said. You are assuming the drivers they are talking about are the same 13.5. I didn't see any mention of a version number

Not 13.5.

The "Prototype" driver will be released mid summer - sometimes in Q3 2013.

Yep....Maybe by the time they are available for purchase they'll come to their senses.

Would make more sense around $850 or so.

The only reason I can think of for AMD to release this card before the driver issues were fixed is because they are going to release a second "improved" version in another quarter, and this release is just a quick cash grab from those with more money than sense.

BTW, I own a 7970 and am pretty happy with it...

Would that be with or without the game bundle?

Kidding me, with. You get the same bundle if you buy two 7970s, AND you get more performance, AND for about $850ish.

AMD totally botched this with that price tag.

Because it's late in the game to play catch-up. The 690 has been in the game for a year now, the Titan is single GPU, and other "7990s" have been out for months.

Put out a "halo card" that's in the same performance bracket, for the same price, as competition doesn't work when you're this late, and without any real "bang". Not to mention, they haven't fixed drivers yet, so you're still not looking at a fully complete package.

It just looks bad. You might get a few shoppers who want something new and different, but most people who are in this market already have a CF or SLI setup, or a 690/Titan.

AMD cant justify $1000 when 2x7970 MSI are significantly cheaper by hundreds of dollars.

Drivers are yet to be fixed and 780 GTX will launch and you can buy 2 of those instead of one 7990

For all the flak this guy gets, he's right.

The price is going to drop, and them annoucing it this that high is just going to slap them in the face. Have they learned nothing from HD 7970 launch? At least back then they had 3 months with zero competition, they don't have that luxury this time around.

Isn't this about the time someone should be posting the "supply and demand" graph?

On a side note, does anyone know what kind of sales numbers they expect with a card like this? And how many similar cards have sold (PC 7990, 690, etc)?

I can't imagine those numbers to be very high.

While thumbing through other articles me thinks this card is going to be fancier for the bitmining crew.

Less power/heat/noise than CFX 7970s. That's got to be worth something to them. One slot, stack a few of them into their miners before the end of bitmining days.
