AMD R9 270X is Disappointing..

Both NV and AMD release new cards that are often slightly more expensive then prices on clearance inventory for old gen products. HD6850/6870 vs. 5850/5870 is a prime example of that.

R9 270X is worse than 7950. Not denying that. I would never recommend R9 270X at $199 when HD7950 is $199-220.

On R9 280X, the situation is not as clear cut.

1) better after-market coolers
2) higher GPU clocks on some models without a large price premium
3) UEFI bios on some models
4) TPU says the Never Settle bundle is included

My honest opinion? The reason R9 280X is not particularly better than 7970Ghz is because of NV's ridiculous pricing. If 770 was $299-329 then AMD would have never been allowed to replace 7970Ghz with a $299 R9 280X.

Right now AMD has no incentive at all to offer a lot more performance than 7970Ghz for $299 since 770 is $100-150 more expensive for 2-4GB versions. I blame NV's market positioning for R9 280X being nothing special.

Think about it:

MSI Gaming R9 280X 3GB = $310 without MIR
vs.
MSI Gaming GTX770 2GB = $399
MSI Gaming GTX770 4GB = $469 after $15 MIR

You say that 770 will perform better in games that take advantage of NV specific features such as PhysX in Batman but what about games where R9 280X will match or beat GTX770 for $100-150 less? What about Mantle for BF4? I don't think it's viable to justify such a large pricing premium on 770.

I thought GPUs were purchased to play games in general. Whats this argument of games which favour one vendor or the other. there are always going to be AMD GE and NVIDIA TWIMTBP games now and in the future. what we need to see is how these cards perform on all kinds of games. thats the reason for reviewers to pick a set of games and calculate an avg performance. a single game is never a good basis on which to judge or decide on a GPU. btw even if you pay the full price of Batman Arkham origins and get a R9 280X, its less expensive than a GTX 770.

Exactly. Fact of the matter is NV's 660/770's pricing is out to lunch. 760 also need a price cut.

@ raghu78: There is no doubt that GTX 770 is no miraculous "value", but those who prefer NV or NV-friendly games (such as Batman Arkham Origins) will justifiably buy it. On the other hand, HD 7950 and 7970 OC editions offer the same or better features, the same or better performance, a lower price, relative to R9 270X and R9 280X, while also including a free game bundle. Hardly seems like a step in the right direction for those interested in AMD cards at these price points.

The trick why old HD7000 series is better buy is:
When you manufacture something that is evolving every year or two you need to make sure you get rid of the previous generation as soon as possible. You can't give better value with new products, because you will be left with the old ones for good. It is almost impossible to change all stock in day 1. You can't sell every piece of last gen 1 day before next gen comes out, because that could lead to missed sales and empty shelves. You need to put old next to new and make sure some people will go with better value of old product, and some will go for a "new and shiny" overpriced product.

Well put. These cards will see price cuts once the 7870, 7950, and 7970 are nearly gone.

Not to mention it is top of the line in terms of "quietness" and low load temperatures. Pretty amazing for a card that actually pulls more power.
 
I could see this going a lot like the 4890 went. 4890 was a tweak/refresh on the 4870 created late in the lifecycle. As the cycle drew to a close, 4870 went discontinued and 5X cards where just around the corner which led to a firesale on the 4890 cards. I remember getting a 4890 for $150 after MIR which lasted me until last year when I went to a 670.
 
Do we have a conclusion of what's the best bang for buck for these new cards yet? Was thinking of upgrading my 6950 2G sometime during the upcoming holiday sales. I game on a 1920x1200 lcd.

I would get the Asus or MSI 280x for just a hair over $300. its competition, the $400 770, looks like a joke now.
