I have a 3200+ venice e3 at 2.5ghz. I was planning on waiting until vista to do my upgrade to an e6600 and the whole shabang!. With the crazy low prices coming on the opteron's at the end of the month what should I do.

I would be willing to stay with AMD if I can see a 50% increase over my current chip. What x2 or opty would give me that? I paid 190.00 for my 3200+ over a year ago, so I suppose I could spend 200.00 to get 50%+ more speed.

Thanks

And with some OCing you can get 2.6-2.8GHz easy. There you go, much improved performance with faster speeds AND 2x the cores. I'm personally waiting for the Opty price drops.

How far a drop do you need? ZZF has 175 for $232 shipped.

Err, an X2 3800+ is $150 right now, why wait for a month to get a similarly-performing CPU for $50 more. Sure, the cache makes Opterons better, but the difference is not all that great. I think we'll be seeing AMD price drops on the desktop side, though, since AMD is gonna release a whole "slew" of X2s in November (the 5200+, 5600+ and 6000+, I believe, in addition to the FX 70, 72 and 74 packs) but I don't know if these price drops will apply to socket 939, since that's becoming a bit rare.
