AMD Platform/Processor Moves

in light of all the information going around re: the Inq article, i made a few calls and got the real story.

1.) the s939 Opterons are NOT going away. Rather, the 1xx series opterons will be transitioned to Socket M2 and positioned as entry level 1P server/workstation procs. AMD will be positioning the X2's as upper-end consumer processors and the A64s will be mainstream. Didn't ask about Sempron since i don't care.

2.) the 2xx and 8xx series Opterons will be moving to Socket F in Q2.

3.) the Opteron 185 is coming Q2, 2006 around the time of the complete transition to M2. This will be an M2 part only.

4.) EOL processors will be the 140, 142 (i think the 140 is EOL'd already, but, whatever). 144 is coming soon with the 146 to follow. the Opteron 165 is NOT BEING discontinued though stock will remain tight INTO Q1, 2006. You will see some part discontinued in Q3/Q4 next year with the appropriate pricing moves happening along the way.

just to clarify.

Sounds good, but "made a few calls" to whom? Sorry, I have to be the devil's advocate since people are debunking the Inquirer article due to a lack of information source ID so before anyone cries BS, I'll ask for said source 😉

The news of the 165 is encouraging...I'll be skipping M2 and ddr2 so having the 165 available next year for 939 would be nice to see.

So, if I'm reading this right AMD are just temporarily withdrawing the S939 Opterons until they're launched for M2 as well next year?

How is this going to affect the price of X2 A64s then? I'm vaguely confused.

My AMD Opteron Accounts Manager based out of GA. His name is John. Sorry for not releasing any more information than that. Obviously, if you wish to talk more about this, my phone # is in my sig. 🙂

it's a supply thing right now. s939 opterons will continue to be made up until the point M2 is available. Obviously, AMD still will have the "legacy" s939/s940 platforms to cover, soooo...read into that what you will.

I wouldn't expect you to post more detailed info than that, thanks. 😉 Sounds like a valid source. Thanks for keeping us in the loop:thumbsup:

Hey Dave,

Just a heads up, but you may want to revise your signature to say "Queue updated daily" (or whatever the case may be), cause I sent you an e-mail late last night and I'm not "in the queue" yet. UNLESS I didn't follow "proper queue guidelines"🙂

Also, thanks for providing optys at a reasonable price😉

So basically they'll be shipping out more S939 Opterons when they can until M2 when they may stop production but they should still support S939 after/ during M2 anyway?

Thanks.
