Well, it's a good idea. I'd be willing to put up with a few bugs, if I could have gotten my quad-core for half price. I mean, they have to do something. Some cashflow is much better than no cash flow.:Q

Not really the desired thing for AMD to have to do, but always good for the consumer. Maybe they are making way for the introduction of the non-TLB affected steppings. I may spring for one of those when they show up in black-box form.

if true I might pick one up but I really don't want one with the TLB errata...

I think that AMD is trying to get rid of these defective CPU's because probably nobody would have bought them anyway. It's also not a very bad idea for those with an AM2 motherboard like myself. But AMD doesn't make any money selling CPU's like that, they just loose more and more until there is nothing else to loose. The Intel monopoly is near.

I don't believe it yet. The phenom 9500 is still $239 on newegg, same price it's been for over a week. Newegg is very good about not getting stuck with unwanted inventory so I'd expect to see that number coming down already if AMD has indeed announced a 50% price haircut for their flagship CPU product only a month after release.

But yeah, for $150-ish, I'd be tempted to pick one up. AM2+ boards are reasonably priced too. Of course, if the Q6600 drops to low 200s in response AMD is right back where they were.

This is a repost, and Fuad Abracabovich (sp) of Fudzilla created this rumour.

I will believe it when I see it.

BTW what the heck is a "dual core price"?

Would a phenom quad core @ 2.2ghz be faster for the average user than a dual core at 3.2ghz?

Hard to answer your question as there are no 3.2Ghz Phenom-based dual cores out.

I would say "yes" to his question, for most users.

A phenom at 2.2 would equate to around a 2.4 X2.

Most modern games are multi-core, and the older ones that aren't won't need more than 2.2ghz in most cases.

If this price cut is real, this could be a great buy for many people.

Don't believe anything 'till you see 'em at NewEgg.

i am not seeing it at any etailer... all the phenoms are still the locked versions... and they still cost way too much (230$ for slowest, 300 for "faster")

Up here in Canada, it's still costing $270 at NCIX and $273 at Canada Computers for the Phenom 9500.

A price cut for what a regular consumer cant buy. Woo hoo. Even if it was true, I honestly wouldnt buy one now if they were 99.00 dollars. That's how bad it is until 2008.

Are you referring to the TLB Errata bug?

Which means what?

Anyway, newegg has marked them both down pretty drastically. I'm thinking this rumor is true. I'm not surprised, however. That's what I would do with a bunch of not very useful CPU's, myself.

would probably beat the crap out of a dual in folding. plus you can o/c a bit i think.

interesting, if these become much cheaper may be really good for folding boxes,

especially if fry's bundles them with a free mb.

True, although the 9500 at $200 is a much better buy. 100MHz is not worth $45.

In fact I would say that, at stock speeds, the 9500 beats the Q6600 in price/performance. Obviously overclockers would still favor the Q6600.

more interesting
