Looks like the new 965 at 3.4ghz will arrive at stores any day. Both the 955 and 945 have recently dropped in price.

This is the real deal:

955 for $210... But with a free (AR) AM3 motherboard thrown in.

This is a SB710 board with all the ACC options. Insane combo if you only need 1 GPU.

I was pissed when I first saw this thread, being as I just purchased a 955 for $245 a few days ago.

I called up Newegg and BAM they credited my account no questions asked.

Big ups to Newegg. I will never shop anywhere else.

even though I have far more important things to spend my money on, that deal is SOOO tempting. Must Resist ...

Why would I buy a Phenom II 955 over a i7 920? I have a Microcenter in my area so they are priced similarly.

Considering I want to throw my 295GTX in the box with it what is really my best option?

The fact that you can get a 955 + mobo for $215 but i7 920 + mobo will be $415.

Both overclock very, very well, a small edge probably in the i7's favor. Either one is plenty fast for any game today, and probably will be for a while. The 955 combo with the motherboard is a great deal, hard to beat. The 955 also makes sense fo a lot of people who have an AM2+ board or would like to hold on to their DDR2 (say you have a nice 8GB kit or something) a little longer as it gives you the option to do so. You really can't go wrong with either of those chips, both are great.

I'd buy the i7 or wait for the i5.

Phenom II 955 $200 + $130 mobo = $330

Core i7 $200 + $170 mobo = $370
