AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE --> X4 B50 BE OC

Just got this chip yesterday along with a new motherboard and ram. I got this chip with high hopes of unlocking. IT WORKED! This is pretty sweet chip. It's my first real oc'ing chip and so far so good. Thus far, I'm up to 3.7ghz @ 1.4v just changing the multiplier (18.5x200). I've also been able to tighten my memory timings from 9-9-9-24 to 8-8-8-24. Intel Burn Test stable through 10 runs on the Standard Stress level. However, I have been unable to view temps. RealTemp and CoreTemp both fail to recognize the processor. Any suggestions on an alternate way of getting this other than bios? Anyway, I just thought I'd share this for those who may be interested. I plan on tinkering with it more. Again, I am pretty new to OC'ing in general, so any tips or suggestions would be awesome!

Hm, I dont think my overdrive could be right lol. I have a tmpin 3/4 showing -128C / -293C. It also shows an asus_cpu_temp that shows 30C, that sounds a bit better, almost even too low

I use HWMonitor ... and guess.

I don't know specificly where the sensors are but here is my conclusion:

TMPIN0 = System
TMPIN1 = CPU
TMPIN2 = Northbridge

The TMPIN1 may be the HS but when comparing the best I can to the BIOS it seems mostly consistent. As you can tell temps are not really an issue for me, anyway.

I unlocked and undervolted (-0.125v in BIOS) my Phenom 550 -- dropped my overall power consumption at load about 1/3 (to 129w).

Idle with C&Q ---> 0.832
Load ---> 1.184v

If I want the rig to sleep without sometimes waking with a BSOD I have to up the undervolt to -0.1. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Interesting. Maybe that asus cpu reading is about right then. I put my old stock Phenom X4 HSF on it as opposed to the dinky little thing it came with. Could be making more a difference than I thought

congrads for unlocking to PII x4, I'm surprised it can be oc to 3,7 most people say the unlocked core is warped in some way that limits oc but looks like you got good chip! excellent money well spent :]

What's your stepping and batch code? Just wondering...I have an unlocked 550 BE (B50 x4) that I haven't tried to OC over 3.5, but temps get to almost 50º C at 3.5 so I don't want to push it too hard.

Don't use TMPIN3/4. Those are broken if you unlock the 3rd and 4th cores. TMPIN2 should be the correct one, depending on your board.

I'm not sure of the stepping and batch code, unless my screenshot displays the stepping/revision correctly. Which I'm not sure if it does because its now recognized as a different cpu. As for the motherboard I'm using, Asus 790X Evo seen here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131402. I didnt even boot the cpu as a X2 at all. As soon as I had finished the build I went right into the bios set ACC to auto and turned unleashing mode on and set to 4 core operation.

Very nice. Mine doesn't seem to be as stable as I first thought. The other night it ran IBT stable 10 runs @ 3.7ghz but now it wont do the same. I've had a few BSOD's but currently am stable @ 3.5ghz/1.4v with memory timings 8-7-7-24. I imagine one of the cores isn't completely stable, trying to narrow it down at the moment. Going to try lowering the multiplier on the problem one when I get an idea of which one it is

I have this exact same setup, but F6C beta BIOS instead. Same stepping and batch codes, and mine unlocked also.

Now overclock the CPU-NB, I've added +0.2v and run it at 13x200 for 2.6ghz. If you can get yours up to 2.5-2.7ghz you'll gain another 10-15% in performance across the board-- gotta keep the cores fed with data!

I was going to ask about overclocking the NB. Does the CPU-NB have it's own separate multiplier? I've been using AMD Overdrive for most of my testing, and havent been sure where to add a little extra voltage. I've only adjusted cpu voltage and cpu/fsb multiplier.

Yeah, same sort of thing here. My guess would be one of those cores is a bit faulty. It works sometimes, sometimes not.

Add voltage to the cpu-nb first. If that doesn't do anything then yeah one of the cores might be a little weak.

I did my OC'ing in the BIOS. That's where the multi for it will be.

You can use PhenomMSRTweaker to set voltages and multi's for idle/load. Keep in mind those voltages are in reference to the voltage you've set in the BIOS, so anything below the default setting in PhenomMSRTweaker will be (BIOS setting - Default voltage setting) lower than the BIOS voltage.

Weird issue, it doesn't seem to like to cold boot. After it's been shutdown for a while, when I try to boot it, it BSOD's. This has happened the past two days when I come home from work. Once I get it up it runs fine. I just passed 20 IBT runs stable using 1024mb ram. I passed it with cpu @ 3.5ghz/1.4v, NB @ 2.4, 9-9-9-24 (stock) memory timings.

I bought a x2 550 be with an asus m3n78-vm mb. I was reading the manual from the mb and I don't see anywhere to unlock the other 2 cores. I looked for "advanced clock calibration" or "acc" but nothing. Is this feature to unlock the cores only available with an amd chipset?

Yes, and specifically ones with SB710/750 so either 785, 790 or a couple of 760s. ASRock's also got a line of 780 with SB710.
