Honestly This is my first time on here so I really don't know if someone else made a post about this. So here it goes.

why is it that Intel is pretty much getting away with price gouging their customers? why are being stupid enough to pay $1000 for a processor when you can go to the competition to get a comparable processor for $700+ cheaper?

Personally I used to be an Intel fanboy, but I realized they'd rather their customers shell out $1000 to be able overclock under warrantee.

It makes no sense to me. It may sound like I am ranting... okay I'm ranting, I admitted it, but I need clarification on this subject.

It's an extreme edition cpu, so it really shouldn't surprise you that the price is high. It is afterall intended for a very small audience.

The only reason AMD's Black Edition chips are so much cheaper currently, is that they're no faster than Intel's mainstream offerings.

It's not like AMD hasn't had very expensive chips in the past, they simply have nothing worth the cost currently.

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition Bloomfield 3.33GHz

How is the Phenom II 965 not faster?

Because they are not comparable clock for clock. The Intel chip will murder that AMD chip.

The Phenom II BE isn't really even close to the i7 EE, is it? I imagine if you were to buy an intel processor that is actually equal to the performance of the Phenom II BE the prices would also be in the same ballpark.

In fact, a quick look on newegg shows the X6 1100
(non-BE apparently) selling for approximately the same price as the I7 950, which beats it on most of the benchmarks on AT's bench comparison.

AT bench comparison

If you'll notice, the intel processors seem to spike sharply in price immediately after the I7 950, with the I7 960 almost $200 more...and why not? They've carved out a region of the market in which they have no competition and they're exploiting it.

As luck would have it, you're posting on a website that has a tool to compare CPUs.

Phenom II X4 965 vs Core i7-975

As you can see the Intel processor is faster in every single benchmark, and in some by fairly large margins.

Were you old enough to recall that nearly AMDs entire X2 range (not just the top chip) was seriously over-priced back in 2005?

X2 4800+ $999
X2 4600+ $822
X2 4400+ $619
X2 4200+ $579

Because they could get away with it. Intel had no comparably performing chips. When C2D came, AMDs larcenous pricing structure collapsed.

I am far from a noob, I have 10+ years of experience with computers I know clock speeds but obviously the only responses I am getting is from Intel fanboys.

I suggest you take a step back. If you keep up with the name calling, you'll earn yourself a vacation.

I'm really surprised at how many benches the e8500 actually destroys that poor i7 :D

Imagine my baby running @ 4.0GHz benching against that poor poor thing ;)

Sorry, thats a bunch of crap. Maybe the noob alert is for you?

It's all about architecture, clock speed and cache mean little when comparing 2 completely different architectures.

Athlon 64/ Athlon X2 destroyed Pentium 4/Pentium D. A 2.0Ghz chip from AMD could beat a 3.0Ghz chip from Intel at the time. Tables have basically turned, AMD needs much higher clock speeds in their Phenom II line right now to compete against I5/I7.

so 10+ years in the industry and you start a thread like this? even I figured out different architectures meant different performance from looking at computers for the very first time. current cpus are priced based on their performance and the top cpu just about always has an insane price. as already mentioned AMD did the same thing when they had the fastest cpu lineup.

This has to be a therad to just annoy people. 10+ computer experience and the guy just has no idea! Additionally he's being argumentative while trying to press his point which he 'knows' is completely wrong.

It's a troll thread
