AMD Phenom II 720 start selling at NewEgg etc

Costs more then a Phenom 9850... I wonder what's better in multithreaded apps, the improved architecture tri core with more L3 cache or the extra core in the 9850.

New stuff seems to always be introduced at a high-ish price, I bet in a couple of weeks the price comes down more to where it should be.
 
Is this because AMD is charging Newegg too much to buy them, so Newegg's prices are higher than we think the chip is worth; or is it because Newegg's auto price-inventory algorithms are at work and the prices are high while demand is high relative to Newegg's supplies?

Yes because retail is $125 for the 710 and $145 for the 720. "Early Price Gouging" (supply and demand) I guess.

Probably the 720 will be my next chip, but I'll wait for the price to come in line with what it's supposed to be. Every little bit counts towards a better cooler 🙂
 
New Egg Marketing 101

I guess I don't blame them. It's the early adopter premium.

It looks to me like they are trying to 'funnel' early adopters into AM3 platforms with the $30 discounts on the combo deals. If it's what you are looking for the Phenom II 720 / Asus 790FX (is this the first Asus 'FX' with sb750?) / 2Gb DDR3 1800 is not so bad, I reckon.

They are trying to get early adopters to also upgrade their mobo. They aren't expecting existing AM2+ owners to upgrade to a new AM2+ board, so they are trying to tempt you at the POS (point of sale) with that impulse urge to say "oh, what the heck, it's only another $XX to go AM3...oh I guess I need some DDR3 too then..." click click, ka-ching.

It's purely about increasing the average dollar value per sales ticket...same as being asked if you'd like to super-size that when you order at McDonalds.

I take this as positive news by the way, not good news if you were wanting to by a 720 today, but good news in the sense that it shows there is demand for the 720's as newegg pimps up the price when inventory is declining faster than expected.

(I know you guys deplore Newegg's dynamic pricing algorithms, but I just love seeing its elegance and demand/supply micro-economics in action...course they got me too, I paid some $1300 or $1400 for my chip when it came out, epic loss for me on that price premium)
 
newegg really know how to make a buck but heck they been nice to me so I can't complain but i never buy those early pricing items from them. 166 can get a q8200.
 
For the price NewEgg is selling at, wouldn't it be a better bang for buck if you bought a Q6600? You would get another core, and with both CPUs overclocking to 3.5Ghz, the Q6600 would be faster. Plus, both are 95W TDP.

Yeah, but the Q is so 2006. People don't even notice 'em anymore. A tricycle CPU is much more novel.

Nice.

Have people forgotten? It's not like you can't overclock with a locked multiplier. You just have to turn down your memory and HT multipliers as you raise the bus speed. Yes, it's possible the bus speed will hit a wall before the processor does, but a 710 should still be easily overclockable.
