If your main focus is playing games, you're likely better off with something like an intel e5200. Not that I enjoy saying that, but I think it is true.

For all around use, I would say this is pretty smokin', although I am holding off for the next chips which should use much less power while being more competitive. I am guessing we'll see one at $150 in not too long - but that could be six months and this is now...

BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX A2+ AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

This is a great motherboard to pair up with it, PCI-E 2.0, HD3300 graphics built-in, and the new SB750 southbridge! The board is available as a combo option with the processor for only $79!

It's not because Newegg has a combo deal with this CPU and this for $109 total. Don't really see why you would want/need that, but it is free...

I'm not finding much for comparisons / benchmarks on this card. It would be plenty for a parent's machine, where the worst torture it would receive is some Photoshop action and maybe a chess game? I've never trusted built in video cards but this looks like a winner. I was planning to order the parts for a new machine for them this weekend. May not go the e7200 route after all.

The Radeon HD 3300 graphics built in to that board will definitely be fine for them. Equivalent to about an Nvidia 8400GS video card in games. It will definitely play more than just chess and solitaire ;)

Just noticed that.

There had been talk about Newegg shifting prices based on demand for soemthing, this could be further evidence of that. I can't blame them, but still, crap. May take the deal anyhow, but it's not as sweet as it was earlier.

Yes they are, but 99% of users will never experience that bug. And you won't find another quad-core core $109 ;)

Very tempting even at todays price of $119. Though I'm a little late to the quad cores, I've been looking at the Q6600, I don't game and really need something for video encoding and such. As I've been reading it's true the majority of people will not encounter the TLB at all. This I will have to truly think about before buying a quad core.

Thanks for the heads up OP.

actually sometimes you can get them even cheaper.

i've seen 9150s and 9500s go for under $90 on ebay.

i wouldn't get so excited...

i sold my e7200 and G31 rig, to buy a 9150e and 780g to try out...

it basically cost me nothing to switch but... i sort of want the g31+e7200 back as the 780g has some driver problems...

I dunno. I think the retail boxed Phenom 8650 for $89 at Fry's might be a better deal. Deal ends on Tuesday 10/21.

That is triple core though and not quad core.

Only problem is that some motherboards don't allow you to turn off the TLB fix in the BIOS, meaning you're stuck with 20-30% slower of a CPU permanently.
