AMD Phenom 9600 $149.99 after Coupon at Newegg

If only this was B3 🙁

Then I'd be all over it.

Hopefully the B3 Phenoms will drop to this kind of level and this isn't just newegg trying to clear out B2's. At this point, you can get one of these Phenoms + a Biostar 770 board for $230 and have a decent setup.

Wow, $150 for a quad core. That's $100 less than the q6600. I wish I'd gotten this instead of my E2200. Yeah, I've got it at 3.2 GHz on stock volts, but the two extra cores would've made up for that, since the only CPU-intensive task I do is video transcoding from my HTPC.

Not exactly 😉

Q6600 are being found for $180 to $190 now fairly routinely.

That said, this is a great deal for a cheap quad. (B3 or not)

Well there have been deals for $190-200 ($180 deal was a blowout that lasted for less than an hour), but that depends on you having a Fry's or Microcenter in your backyard. For people ordering online, Q6600 is still well over $200.

If you're not overclocking... 9600 for $150 is probably a better value than a $200 Q6600 anyway. Q6600 would be 33% more expensive but maybe 15% faster. And also, with the 9600 you could buy a 780G board and have great graphics performance as well... with Q6600, no such luck.

I don't know how accurate a lot of those results are.

Phenom looks really bad in Xbitlabs reviews, but not nearly as bad elsewhere.

Under x64 environment: http://techreport.com/articles.x/13633/12

Overall I don't think the Q6600 is 33% faster even in the xbitlabs review, so this is still a decent buy if you want a cheap quad and you aren't overclocking.

Why would you not bump the Q6600's clock even by just a bit? The Phenoms are 'factory overclocked' to the absolute limit. Some have a hard time running at rated speed. The Q6600 has plenty of wiggle room.

Also when you factor in the much higher power draw of the Phenom it becomes a far less compelling value. Unless used very casually, or upgraded within a few months.

That said, $150 is a screaming deal for a 9600, even if it's the B2 stepping and not BE. Anyone interested in playing with a Phenom should jump on this. It's still not a better performance value than $200ish Q6600s though.

If you want to keep your motherboard and memory, AMD is a good choice. Current Intel boards and memory are already almost obsolete with Nehalem coming out this year. AMD's AM3 CPU's should work with DDR2 and in most current boards if I'm not mistaken.

That is a valid argument in one way; AM2 socket will be supported longer than LGA775.

But the problem with that argument is that AMD's 45nm chips coming late this year will not really be superior to Intel's current 45nm chips. 45nm Deneb is supposed to be 15% faster than Barcelona on average, so it would just about as fast as a Penryn clock for clock. But it probably won't overclock as far.

Anyway deal is dead, the 9600 is back up to $219 from $179.

hheeheh i got one of these and put it on ebay for the hell of it.

its already up to 177.50 + 15 dollars shipping and i still got 2 days to go. 8)
