AMD outsells Intel in US retail for the first time

This is just retail, not direct to order(e.g. Dell is not included), but the fact that they're winning by any metric is a huge accomplishment for the company.

Add Dell to those numbers, and it looks quite different. Dell sells ~9.1 million computers a year.
 
Guess they forgot to count all the chipset sales and board chips, not just CPUs, that were sold. That is actually where Intel makes most of their money, supplying board chips to LOTS of manufacturers, for computers, cell phones, etc.

Guess as soon as AMD takes over leadership in that market, Intel WILL have something to worry about.

Hopefully they will continue improving and make similar gains in higher margin areas of the market.
 
Wow, I never would have guessed, they've done well, and of the last 4 computers I've built, they've all been AMD based, my notebooks are Intel tho. Haven't paid attention to sales figures for a long time.

Is Cyrix still making CPU's?

i don't know, things turn around quickly in this industry, the amd64 and amdx2's are way better than anything intel has. if for no other reason than the heat generated by the p4's are just crazy.

basically it would be dell, at some point it will make economic sense for them to switch from intel to amd. if they make the switch, it will pretty much put amd in the lead.

i don't know, things turn around quickly in this industry, the amd64 and amdx2's are way better than anything intel has. if for no other reason than the heat generated by the p4's are just crazy.

It does not matter if AMD has better stuff. Intel has brand recognition with the sheep, marketing is far superior to amd, and they have much better OEM ties.

I dont know how many times i have told people to get an athlon and they have responded, "Athlons? arnt they even worse than a celeron?"

Agreed, AMD becoming #1 anytime soon just won't happen. Sure, they can work on increasing their market share, but they won't pass Intel anytime soon.

at some point reality catches up even with the best of marketing.

celerons are flat out horrible performers. software has caught up with the intel processors, the celeron is just not capable of doing the multimedia stuff that's being demanded of pc's more and more. digital photography, ripping, video's etc. the celeron is the worst performing cpu i've ever seen.
 
Those are all stepping stones. Intel was not always the biggest player, either.
Don't expect AMD to be any nicer though if they ever get to the top of the microprocessor business, they will employ the same techniques as Intel.

I really wish AMD would get back in to te chipset game. It would be good for us because we would see some quality parts and it would drive competition thus forcing them to make better parts and lower their costs. It was not too long ago that Intel relied 100% on third party manufacturs and designers for their chipsets. About 12 years ago was when they first designed and manufactured a chipset with the Intel Logo on it.

Don't those retail boxed CPU's count as retail sales. It is people like us that are buying those chips, especially since we can almost no longer buy OEM.
