It's not marketing hype. The drive is aimed for low end servers, where it competes with current gen SCSI very well. Is it pricey for a desktop user? Of course. Does that make it a bad drive? Hell no! Is it WD's fault the same people that spend $300 more on a GPU for +10fps buy thier Raptors? Again, no!

BTW for $2000 I could have built you a dual opteron that would anihilate any P4 for encoding video.

In December 04 you could not have built a Dual Opeteron PC with what I wanted as far as storage, video and case. I priced dual opterons and dual Xeons, parts from ZZF and New Egg, parts alone were $2500-$2800. Not $2000. $2000 was my budget at the time. Maybe with todays prices you could get closer to $2000.

As for the performance boost from the raptors, what exactly is it? Boot time is 10 secs faster? Programs load 5 secs faster? Load time for games is 5-10secs faster? That's all a home user is going to see. It won't make any programs actually run faster. It won't increase the FPS on a game. It won't encode video any faster. So what exactly do you get for the money, other than noise and heat?

I read very well . It's beacuse your VERY limited hardware knowledge thaty I say so.

Not at all the retail parts have 3 years of warranty, but if you look at my parts at the end, and if you would know something about hardware parts you would know that all the brands I use offer at least 3 years of warranty, Except for the raptors with a 5 years warranty. OUCHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the albatron 6800GT is certainly quiet. If it has the stock HSF it's not. They all make noise.

Raptors 2% in performance gain???? JA JA JA!! You really don't know what a raptor is. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...adid=1516994&STARTPAGE=3&enterthread=y
I know exactly what a "raptor" drive is, it's a waste of money for home users. As I mentioned in a reply to another post, what performance boost do you get other than slightly faster boot time or load times? It won't increase the FPS in games or increase video encoding performance. I'ts mostly for people who like the word "raptor" and want to brag to everyone that they have one of tthose 10000rpm drives. Hell with all the noise and heat, as long as it's a "raptor"

I don't think my system performs like an FX 55, it does cause it is runnig above FX55's clock speed (the only difference would be the caché, which doesn't affect the Athon 64 achitechture performance too much) . And yes my CPU is overclocked, a thing that you won't be able to do without some liquid nitrogen.

Here again showing your ignorance. You are a lost case.
Here again, you just don't get it either. Not everyone wants to overclock their system. And deal with the inevitable problems that arise. Check these forums. 50% of the people posting have questions or problems with their OCs. Maybe you got lucky and didn't have any problems, but that's not the norm. It wasn't for me. After about a week of problems, I decided it wasn't worth the effort for the little performance boost, and even at 2.5Ghz the 3500+ didn't perform as well as my P4, IN THE APPS THAT I AM USING. This is what I said way back on my first post. My comments pertained to performance with what I was using. You all made it a AMD vs Intel debate, that escalated into other areas. I'm sure your 2.6Ghz computer is fast, but I bet for MPEG2 encoding using Premeire Elements and DVD ripping/encoding using DVDShrink, it's not faster than my Dell. I will also bet that my Dell is quieter than your PC, and I'm not using ANY aftermarket quiet fans, everything is OEM. Dell did a really good job of cooling the P4 and keeping it quiet. Unless you've seen/heard one then you can't really comment. I did have an Athlon, with retail HSF and a 6800GT with retail HSF and the Dell is much quieter.

I'm am really sorry that you spend that amount of money in an inferior system, but it is not my fault, its yours.
What makes it inferior? Cause I can't OC it? And AGAIN, I did not spend anymore money on the Dell then I did on my AMD system. I had certain components that I wanted that increased the cost of the AMD system to within a $100 or so of the Dell. Prices change everyday, so you can't gp with what prices are today. A month ago the 2 systems were about equal in price. And the cost of having someone else build it was only about another $150, which to me is worth it. My time is worth more than that. So that was/is my choice.

And bulid a PC is not only follow directions and use a screwdriver, you have to choose the right parts, you have to use your brain and find the best config for the system,
I had the "right" configuration. Just for you cause you're so special, I'll list what I had in the system, it would've been the same whethet I built it or had it built-

ASUS A8N- SLI Deluxe
eVGA 6800GT
3500+ Retail
2 x 512Mb Corsair 3200XL
2 x 300Gb Maxtor Diamond Max
Samsung DVD burner
Lian Li V1000 case
Enermax EP465 PSU
I think that's about it. If you with all your wisdom and superior intelligence can tell me exactly what is wrong with this configuration, then by all means let me know.

That is the reason why you have to buy preassembled systems from DELL or from anyone.

I don't HAVE to buy preassembled. I CHOOSE to buy preassembled. That's my choice, it's also my money not yours. And just because your a tight wad, that doesn't mean everyone else is. Or maybe you have nothing better to do with your time. I certainly do. I actually have life other than building and playing with a computer. You're probably addicted to Everquest too, and that's where all your "friends" are.

Just go away with your DELL andl stop liying saying that it's faster and cheaper than a "similar" AMD configuration (Just beacause your very personal bad experiences with AMD). WE ALL KNOW IT IS FALSE, so you lost your time, mainly beacuse you are not able to prove it.

I'm not lying, I didn't say it was cheaper. I said it was "about" the same cost. And it is faster in the things that I do with it, compared to a stock 3500+. And no I won't go away just because I'm not one the AMD fanboys.

Gees That X850XT PE alone blows away the eVGA6800GT, so in games it will be faster. And for encoding, if you don;t OC the 3500, yes a 3.6 will be faster. You are really comparing apples to oranges, AND YOU CANT OC OBVIOUSLY, so your input just isn't valid.

The original poster obviously doenst know too much about PC architecture, that is a given.

This whole Intel vs AMD thing, which seems to pop up in every single thread, is getting a bit ludicrous.

Intel: Multitasking
AMD: Gaming

Its that easy.

Edit: typo

Obviously you are an ignorant neophyte when it comes to designing platforms. If you want a 6800U or a X850 XT PE then obviously you can't afford a dual opteron. Perhaps you should review your priorities.

For the people that use thier computers for heavy multitasking and make money with them, the speed of the Raptor pays for itself. Also Raptors run cooler than 200GB+ drives. So don't try and feed me that heat bullshit.

Raptors+multasking=OK
SCSI 15K + cacheing intelligent controller + 5 disks in raid0 + multitasking = mind boggling.....

I agree with ribbon on both points. I have a Raptor and I think the drive kicks ass, and I haven't even really stressed it yet.. it definitely does feel faster than my Seagate drive, and that I like! with a modern system being bottlenecked by the hard drive (they all are) having the fastest possible hard drive that isn't the insane price of Ultra320 SCSI, it's worth it no question.

I also agree about the priorities when considering a fast dual CPU system vs. video card when considering an encoding system. Dual Opteron would IMO have been better, but hey whatever, your choice not mine, and I'm perfectly fine with that ! :p

Well, well another name caller. You're all so mature on theis forum. How old are, 10?

Agsin for your info, when I was pricing the system with dual CPUs it was with either 6600GT or X700.
Who on this board uses their home built system to make money. Right, Rpators run cooler, sure they do. I believe you. I also got some beach front property to sell you too.

So if anyone is an ignorant neophyte it is most likely you. You and all the other fanboys on this site make assumptions without knowing the facts. So if you don't have anything usefull to add (which is most of the time) then don't add anything.

This will be my last comment on this subject. I'm tired of arguing with you children. I will restate my intitial comment, that my current system out performs a STOCK 3500+ in everything, that I will be using it for. I never said it was cheaper. I never said I couldn't build my own. I said I chose not to. I didn't have much luck OCing the system I had and didn't want to spend the time trouble shooting it when even at 2.5Ghz it still didn't perform encoding as fast as the P4, nor was their any noticeable increase in game performance.

So all you geniuses can go ahead and build your own and have bragging rights as to how much you can OC your CPU or Video card. You can argue among yourselves about who is better or who has the faster system. I don't care.

As I said before, I'm happy with what I have. It does everything I need it do. And I'm happy with what I paid for it. It's my money, my time. my choice.

Another thing, don't assume you know me, or anyone else, or what I can or cannot do. You know absolutly nothing about me. All you have are assumptions. And well all know what people who assume things are. (hint- take the first three letters, capitalize, make it bold)

Syonara. Adios. Hasta la vista.

You are so wrong. The Raptor increases the greatly the performance In some advanced desing apps I use, and also increases performance in the normal apps (not so greatly but notable), that's why prefer the 10K disk. And they heat about the same than the 250 Caviar disk. I can see You haven't used a raptor right?

Sorry but you said that your new computer was faster in EVERYTHING including games,

I quote you:

"Absolutely nothing wrong with my Dell XPS. It's quiet, much quieter than my previous custom built Athlon 3500+ with a 6800GT. It's faster at EVERYTHING, including the games I play- Doom 3, Far Cry all the HL interations."

Which is obviously not true. Besides I didn't say My PC was faster in encoding (but the difference is not significative, at least it is not worth the 800 extra dollars). I said it was faster( In general get it??)
AND YES I HAVE SEEN HEARD P4 PRESCCOT DELL MACHINES(I work with THEM ALL DAY), AND I CAN SAY THEY ARE LOUDER THAN MINE, AND ABOVE ALL A LOT HOTTER. UNDERSTAND , THE 6800GT I HAVE is a DIFFERENY BRAND of yours, Maybe your EVGA was loud, but mine which is ALBATRON (DIFFERENT BRAND, DIFFERENT COOLING, GET IT??) is very quiet , I cannot even hear the card fan., neither the CPU FAN. You generalize: " the 6800GT is loud" as if all the manufacturer used the same loud fans.

Nothing wrong with the configuration. You was the wrong saying that your system was faster in EVERYTHING. It's all your fault not getting the system stable.
