If money is not an issue, say a mobo with PCI E, what would be the platform to go for?

True, but generally he is correct. For most video and audio encoding, Intel is still the best choice overall especially for multi-tasking. For gaming and everything else that works best on single-threading, AMD is the way to go. 'nuff said.

LOL. Yeah, this question has been asked about umpteen billion times.

As akugami said, P4 for AV stuff, and AMD for everything else.

Also, to the OP. Seriously, do a search. This question has been asked since the dawn of time. Plus, this kinda stuff usually turns into flamewars. Unless that was your original intention ;) .

Right now I would go with:

Dual AMD Opteron 252 on a Tyan K8WE S2895. That gives you the option for Dual Core Opterons and Nvidia SLI with two 16x PCI E slots.

Dual AMD Opterons eliminates Intel's Multitasking advantage and then some ;)

If money isn't really an issue it would be the best option, this gives you the power of the best single task (which P4 doesn't have) and multithreaded performance (Far superior to P4, because the full use of resources, HT is a waste of them) until AMD dual cores will come out.

AMD all the way. Words fail to describe dual Opteron 280s on the Tyan Thunder K8WE.

Vaguely you are incorrect...look at most lame mp3 and aother audio encoding test...besweet,etc...Those apps are rarely optimized and are about raw speed and in this case the superior IPC of the AMD wins out....read the reviews...

Video encoding only in extremely HT optimized apps...TMPGenc will gain 20% with HT...Pianncale studio is a bit less thus the lead may not be as great....premier pro from my testing also doesn't look at large as TMPGenc....DVDshrink still has a decent lead in my testing.....

Multimedia is a vague one as well cause there are several areas and INtel does not lead them all....

Look more application specific...

Flame wars are caused by idiots with idiotic statements....(places on falme suit and LOL!!!)
