AMD or Intel?

I am planning on building my own PC, so what kinda processor should I get? I'm leaning towards AMD cuz they are cheaper and their benchmark test surpass Intel's. Also wondering about compatiablity issues with an AMD processor. It seems to me lots of software say a Pentium processor, will an AMD processor still run it? Thanks

all software will run on an intel or amd. compatibility issues with amd is little to none.

get yourself a nice Athlon and save your money for other components.

There are virtually no compatibility issues between software and AMD procs (you'll have a hard time finding any)

It would also be a good idea to pick up a motherboard that has a chipset made by the CPU manufacturer (ex. i815 or AMD-761).

Don't forget about the Via C3 chip. It's got terrible performance, but on the plus side it has . . . um . . . it has . . . really low heat dissipation?

What issues are there regarding T-birds and Win2000?

I've seen references to mobo/chipset probs.

Is it with specific hardware or just general Win2000/AMD problems?

Are there fixes/workarounds?

I'm trying to decide between Intel and AMD also, and I don't want to run into problems.

There are no issues with W2K and AMD processors. AMD chips are fully X86 compliant...as is W2K.



I've seen references to mobo/chipset probs.

There are a few isolated instances of some hardware not working reliably with Via chipsets. Creative soundblaster cards can cause conflicts if used on a board with the Via 686b. This has been addressed with a patch that is incorporated into the new 4-in-1 drivers. The Netgear FA311 also has been reported to have problems with the Epox 8K7A motherboard...not sure as to why...others may know more.


Just to let you know, I have a motherboard with the VIA 686b and a Creative Soundblaster...didn't even know there was a problem until someone told me about it. IMO these are non-issues.

Well, people say its easier to setup an Intel computer than an AMD. To me, both is easy to setup. AMD just give me a little more problem. Dang Via!!!

I would go with an AMD for several reasons:

1)Price vs. performance is the greatest in the industry. Even though some people say the new Intel 1.8ghz is faster than a 1.4 MP, look how much of a difference is between the 2 processors. When the new AMD processors come out, they will again overtake Intel for a cheaper price.

2)Overclockability. I don't know if you intend to overclock, but I've had much better luck overclocking AMD chips as opposed to Intels.

3)Socket consistancy. I don't know how big of a deal this is, but the socket that AMD uses is not going anywhere for a while, so your upgrade options are open. Meanwhile, Intel will be switching to Northwood in the near future, so you will not be able to upgrade unless you wait for the Northwood's to come out before purchasing, due to the change in sockets.

Also, don't forget that overall, a 1.4 ghz AMD processor is faster than a 1.7ghz Intel processor.

AMD all the way. I had a few issues at first, but now that they are ironed out Im very happy with the CPU. No issues in Win2k that I have experienced. I say save yourself the money and get a great video card.

It depends on what your going to use the system for. If your going to test high end software on a corporate level. Network admin, alot of engeneering apps etc. I would stay Intel. If your building a home system for gaming and general internet use go AMD and you will not be dissapointed. You will have some small issues with AMD chipsets it is just a fact of life, but the payoff is worth it. Just my 2 cents....

I tend to agree with Icy cept for one little-bit, all AMD chipsets tend to be quite nice, VIA chipsets tend to be a bit more troublesome....

But on a personal PC, i see no reason not to buy a AMD, with AMD chipset, of course...

If you bought an Intel processor for your new PC you might as well hang a big retard sign on your chest! The Athlon is a much better processor than the Pentium 4! There are several issues with the pentium 4. First it has a bogus ram setup! Rambus ram is expensive, it puts out too much heat, and it needs to be paired! Second you need a special case with a special psu! Third the P4's are way too expensive! You can get an Athlon 1.4 and a decent motherboard for the price of the fastest Pentium 4!
Wait for the Athlon 4 desktop and wait for a socket A motherboard with Nvidia's Nforce chipset! You will be very happy with your Pc and you'll be very happy you still have money in your wallet!

I got Intel 1.7GHZ because Money is not an issue, and they are more stable in my experiance.

Right now I would go with AMD because of upgrade options, when the newer P4's come out later using a different socket and chipset you will be stuck with first generation p4 hardware that is non-upgradable.

I never have any problem associated with running AMD.
