<<<is building barebones system for $600.
msi sli
a643000 (hopefully oc to 3800 performance)
gig kingston ddr
6600gt (for now get another 6600gt l8tr)

This system is cheap and fast. I'd say about 25 or 30% slower than absolute high end. Consider just how much more performance your getting with 3 grand. something to consider when splurging...

im gonna say AMD64 for you

but i really do have to say that, even compared to my NON HT, 400FSB Intel P4 2.4Ghz (24x muliplier!) thats on a board with all the RIMM slots full (dreadful latency....all 4 RIMMS filled with PC800 RDRAM) MY AMD64 does seem to be less nippy round windows with a few things.

most notable is the period right after u load windows. the computers have basically the same to load up at start and the intel gets there quicker

of course after that its game over.....i tried cs: s on the p4 the other day and on 40player server im seeing 10FPS

AMD is only releasing Dual Core Opterons this month. We will not see AMD Dual Coare on the dekstop until later this year/2006

Check out this thread here for AMD dual core desktop CPUs -> click me. I discussed the availabilty here, and so far it does not look like late 05/early 06. ETA is June.

$3000 is an insane budget, especially if youre not including displays or speakers.

I want a high end system so I don't have to upgrade for another 2 or 3 years. I already own 2x 2005fwp and Z-5500 Digital, so no need to upgrade those.

Get a $2000 computer and get a real soundsystem :p

You're better of just saving some money for future upgrades.
No matter how much money you throw on a computer it's gonna be obsolete(relatively speaking) in 2 years.

Spending $1000 per year over three years instead of $3000 all at once would net you a FAR nicer computer in the future, and enough spare parts to build another one should you feel the need.

That's what I thought about my z-560s. I was wrong. Reference is bliss.
