NOTES:
I like to use the computer for: Watching Movies, Listening to Music, Play Games, Video Editing/Encoding, Burning DVDs, and what not. So what system is more suitable for my needs. I know I have ask this once in the forum but the stuff I've listed above is what I'm gonna get next week. Any inputs or comments is welcome. Thank you.

I'm an AMD fanboy, so I'm going to push the AMD line. Gaming is typically better on AMD's, and Video Encoding is generally better on Intel. Prices flucuate often, so I'd say choose the cheaper solution without giving up performance.

I'd go for the Intel. That sounds like the better all-round option for you, especially if you're going to be doing other things while encoding - Intel are much better at multitasking. And they are still more than good enough for games. I'd say go for the AMD if pure gaming performance is what you're after.

Be warned tho, this place is AMD fanboy central - you won't find too many recommending the Intel, or much in the way of level-headed discussion 🙂

LOL! Can't argue with that.............around here AMD is the choice.😉

Having said that, I do like the fact that AMD S939 will accept the dual cores which are coming up soon while LGA775 is about at the end of it's line in most respects since intel has said it won't go any higher with the speeds.....

I think multitasking is what I do most from day to day use. I would be burning, encoding while surfing, checking email or play lil games. But with AMD FX-55 I have heard lots of great reviews and is not far behind from multasking? But then again, the INTEL P4 Extreme Edition 3.4 is King of encoding. Hard choice 🙂

You're paying an incredible amount of money to get the EE or FX tacked on to your CPU name. You can get 90% of the performance of either for about half the cost. I think getting an EE or FX processor is a really poor decision based on what you can get for significantly less money.

EE tests

FX tests

From what you said, you may be better served then by holding out a few more weeks for a dual core solution!😉

with that said, I'm planning to spend $2500 - $3000 for it. What is your recommendation?

EndGame - I like the fact that AMD is coming out with Dual Core.. but the wait is to long. Rumors has said that the Dual Core won't be out till mid of 05? I onno.. correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you.

Intel's launch date is tomorrow and AMD is rumored to be not very far behind.........now, with that said, how thick will the paper be that launches those chips????😉 (hopefully not very thick!)

Hyperthreading will be your friend.

why would you get the 3.4 ee? when the 3.8 performs better in encoding and is cheaper??? but the pentium d would definately be worth the wait.

I haven't been upgrade for nearly 3 years now. I've been out of the "build your own system" scene for so long. I've just recently read some of the reviews online and catch up a little bit but still need more info. That's why I go here and ask and thanks to all of those that participate in this thread.

Lets move on. I have $2500 - $3000 to build a new box. What is your recomemendation and others? Thank you.

Thank you.

If you go AMD, the fastest thing you should get is a 4000+. I still think that's a pretty bad idea when a 3800+ is so close to it and a better deal.

If you're going P4, just avoid EE like the plague.

I think it is funny that monarch calls the ATI card an Extreme Edition...typo 🙂.

BTW it looks like you are a light gamer so why such a high end video card? An XL would probably be enough.

You could get a system which would perform almost as well by getting a p4 3.6/3.8 or amd 3800+/4000+, and save a decent amount of money.

In most gaming benchmarks, the 3800+ is only 5% slower then the FX-55, but it costs about half as much. The 4000+ is generally only 1% or 2% slower, but the cost saving isn't as great. The only real advantage of the FX series is the unlocked multiplier for OCing (i think they're still multiplier unlocked, aren't they?). But then again, who needs to overclock an FX-55 anyway?

And with the money you can save, you can get youself some great software/games, monitor, speakers, keyboard/mouse etc...

If you really want extreme gaming, and are willing to pay for it (it seems you are), i'd swap my CPU, MOBO and GRAPHICS for these:

CPU: AMD Athlon64 3800+
MOBO: ASUS A8N-SLI deluxe
GRAPHICS: 2x GeForce 6800Ultra (in SLI)

Although a single 6800Ultra is slightly slower then the X850XT, two of them together will outperform an X850XT, especially at higher resolutions and with AA/AF activated.

But the 90% isn't in all benchmarks, sometimes the top of the line processors stand well ahead. Granted this is not in many but when they flex their muscle they show their true potential.

Rod you're right. I was thinking of the same thing b4. Get a 3800+ then wait till Dual Core come out and replace that. BTW anybody have a clue when the venice core will be out?

With $3000 you can go Nventiv Mach II cooling on a Dual core pentium 4 with DDRII and SLI in a couple weeks.

$3000 is an insane budget, especially if youre not including displays or speakers.

I want a high end system so I don't have to upgrade for another 2 or 3 years. I already own 2x 2005fwp and Z-5500 Digital, so no need to upgrade those.

AMD is only releasing Dual Core Opterons this month. We will not see AMD Dual Coare on the dekstop until later this year/2006
