AMD OR INTEL

What would be the better performer, an AMD 64 3000 CPU with 512 L2 cach or an INTEL 2.8 PRESCOTT
800 FBS with 1mg L2 cach on matching MSI motherboards. The intel setup is going to be cheaper
by $40.00 and which one would run cooler with stock heatsinks.

well what are you using the computer for?
gaming=amd
encoding=intel

the amd would run cooler

Some gaming, benchmarking and general use. No encoding or intense programs. Just looking
to upgrade. I would like to get windows running alittle faster in general.
Cpu tempeture is also a concern.

yeah gaming go AMD, encoding/apps go Intel. Also something to note is are you looking at potential upgradeability? The A64 chip your looking at is on socket 754 and the last cpu on that socket is most likely going to be the A64 3700+.

On the Intel side, are you getting a socket 478 mobo or lga775 mobo? Intel isnt going to make many more new cpus for socket 478 (upgradeable to 3.4E & 3.4EE) since they got the lga775 socket out and theyre gonna mostly produce lga775 socket processors in the future. But the lga775 mobos are like $20-40 more expensive than the 478s.

Oh, yeah, CPU temps (using stock heatsinks). The A64 would run cooler since it has the Cool'N'Quiet technology integrated into the chip.. Basically it clocks down the chip when idle which keeps it cool n quiet hence the name. Also, the Prescotts have been known to run a bit much on the warm side. So I would go with the A64 for your needs.

How about doing a SEARCH? This question has been asked billions of times now.

Gaming = AMD
Encoding = Intel (but not by a huge marging because of DC in SKT939)

yea i got amd, in fact

ive had intel on everything except for this new one. I am not sure how it is, but I am just hoping there is something better then intel.

How about I say Mac? Or IBM? hahaha. this questiuon has been asked centillion times already. The benchmarks may prove that one is better than the other but by what margin? Single digits? Take your pick, for god's sake flip a coin. Hahhaha. But yeah, try organizing your priorities and see which proc does better.

encoding is a myth unless the software and codecs are heavily optimized for SSE2/SSE3 and HT

Agreed! DOWN WITH VIA! 😛

When was the last time via was competative with amd and intel? and that is actually a question, not sarcasm
On a price/performance aspect, they might've been in the race back with the Cyrix PR166 (but that was Cyrix Cyrix, not VIA Cyrix). My first PC was a nasty little refurb with a Cyrix PR166, Win95, a 3GB Quantum Bigfoot and 16MB of EDO RAM (which I upgraded to 32MB and thought I was a Bad Dude 😱), and I began using 3D modelling software on it, if you can believe that 😛 And down the slippery slope... yeah 😛 I gotta kick this habit sometime! :Q

Hey, old man, go away... sshhhh..... hehehe

amd will be the superior performer by far except in encoding. unless you go socket 939, intel will be the better encoder/decoder.

for your situation, I'd get whatever was cheapest. For someone who actually demands every last drop of performance out of their PC, I might recommend otherwise.
