I am thinking about building a system this summer, but I would like to plan well ahead of time. Including mobo, what solution would be better, Intel or AMD(preferably Athlon 64). The budget would be around $1000, including monitor and OS, but not including HDD (I can pick one up for free, I have way too many Best Buy Gift certificates). Also, I am planning to use this machine for games and video editing/encoding. A mild to moderate overclock will most likely be given.

I would use AMD. That is all I have owned so I am kinda partial. The relative speed of the AMDs is faster contrary to popular belief. The AMDs are a better value for the money. Decent overclocking as well. So let the games begin. hehe

IF you go AMD your right with the A64 part, but your encoding will suffer and if you go intel you will get faster encoding and supposedly less game performance (doubt you would notice the diffrence between a 2.8C and A64 tbh).

Go buy an A64 3000+, for double the cache but little performance diffrence get a 3200+, it has a cooler core name(Clawhammer beats Newcastle) and you can have bragging rights over the people with 2800//3000+

What do you think the prices for the 3000+ and 3200+ be during the summer? how about socket 939? I am looking to use this comp for about two years, and i want to be able to upgrade to current technology.

Technology changes too fast to study this far out. But my take would be that the 939 (if out by then) will be much more exspensive, so I would go 3200+ (or maybe even 3400+) by then. The 3700+ might be the last socket 754 chip, but who knows for sure. In two years, just replace the mobo/cpu.
I would suggest you look at an AMD refurb A64 3000+ from newegg. Even after all the price nonsense lately with newegg refurbs, I checked last night and they are still available for $158. That is in fact what I am running right now in an AOpen AK86-L, and I can say it's more responsive and faster in UT4K than my Athlon Barton system equivalently clocked.
Speak of the devil - they no longer have the refurb OEM A64 3000+ in stock, just the retail for $190. If you're a nut like me, then you'll watch newegg and catch the deal.
Pretty much, AMD and Intel are both great companies. Intel is more expensive and you will be able to squeeze more performance out of their higher priced chip. AMD is cheaper, and is the route most people go when building budget systems.
I'd go AMD 3200+ route if you can afford it, you can OC the 3000+ to 3200+ speeds, but not much farther. The AMD 64's are not good overclockers, so you won't be able to get much farther than 3200+ speeds with the 3000+. Same with the 3200+ to 3400+ speeds, etc.

If you want to achieve any measurable overclock, grab a 2.8ghz P4-C ($185 retail). Otherwise, the A64 3000+ ($224 retail) is the better choice.

I think if you are going to be heavy into video editing and encoding as well as gaming the best compromise would be a p4 "C" with Hyper-Threading system and one that you overclock.
But a better answer would be for you to ask this question the very week you are going to assemble your computer because like others have mentioned technology changes very fast so when you say you are going to upgrade in the summer that could mean june, july or august which is a long time and recommendations change. So ask again when you actually decide to build it and you will get answers that much better match your question because they will be more useful.

If you want better compatability all around and definately better mobo chipsets go with Intel proc and a good mobo with a good intel chipset. You can't go wrong. if you want to save money go with AMD. As far as speed and FPS and FSB no matter what all the benchmarks in the world say it is neglegable. I have both AMD and Intel systems and have less issues on my Intel PCs. Rarely ever have to patch a program because its Intel. I have to patch my AMD because certain programs and games require it. I know i;ll get flamed by people saying "what do you mean a patch for software for AMD systems". Trust me, the patches are out there for AMD even for the most common types of programs. Seen em, installed them, they exist.

Well, I don;t know about getting flamed, but point me to ONE patch aimed at AMD (outside of the K6 patch for windows 95, that was a long time ago, and Microsoft admitted it was their own fault) I have a lot of software, and never had an AMD patch.
And when Windows XP 64 bit comes out, you may just see some nice improvments, depending on what software you run (even 32 bit software)
I don't mean to be one of "those people," but this is a completely irrelavant statement. Longhorn isn't slated for release until, last I read, 2006. Buying a processor now and including that as an incentive is ridiculous.
As it stands right now, the A64 is a fabulous 32-bit processor.
You know there is going to be a 64 bit XP Pro right? there is already a beta out anyone can download on MS's site though I don't know if they are still offering it.
The retail version should be out some time this year so no need to wait till 2006.
Your gonna be pretty hard pressed to get a system and monitor for 1000 if you plan on a new video card too... youll be increasing that budget some if you want a new gen vid card.
Yeah, the next-gen video would be fairly hard to include on this budget, unless...........................
