AMD or INTEL once and for all!

After 2-1/2 yrs., time to build a new system, but I can't decide on which cpu to buy. If my memory serves me correctly, there was some discussion about AMD's failure to replicate Intel's ability to shut down the processor if it got too hot. One thing I don't need is a fried cpu melted into the mb. While THG and AnandTech both seem to give an edge towards AMD for speed and price, they never discuss this potential problem. Are the coolers that come with AMD as good as the boxed coolers for Intel?
For several years, I kinda disunited myself from computer tech/news and now its catch up time. With this in mind, this may be old hat to many of you, so apologies are in order.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Best wishes,

Olin

Intel runs hotter than AMD (assuming u get a prescott -- I think its quite difficult to find northwoods now). There are a few threads around here dealing with exact temp values so check them out. I haven't really hard anything about AMD not being able to shut down the proc if it gets too hot so someone else would have to answer this (where did you hear that by the way?). About which you should get, depends on what you want to use it for.

If you do lots of gaming, AMD.

If you do lots of video editing/multitasking/vid encoding, Intel.

So your choice really.

I read about the AMD issue here at this forum several years back. I number of links were provided and some even provided pictures of melted AMD cpus on the mb.

The athlon 64's do have thermal protection, so that is no longer the case. They will shut down if they get too hot. It depends on what all you plan to use your system for as to which CPU to get, but unless you are using certain video encoding applications, the athlon 64 will perform better than an pentium 4. Considering that the A64 runs cooler and draws less power than the p4 prescotts, the stock coolers that comes with them is more than good enough. My prescott runs warmer at idle, than a lot of A64's run at under full load, using a 3rd party cooler that is way better than the stock intel. Right now price/performance AMD is definatly the way to go.

Not even close. Intels coolers are as good as after market ones copper slugged, nice thick fans, big aluminum fins etc... at least a $25 cooler.

AMD's are all aluminum, small, small 70mmx10mm fan ....about a $5.00 cooler.

Suprisingly the AMD's stay cooler though even under crippled conditions like this.

??? The Athlon64 cooler I got was copper, not all aluminum and that was with a retail 3000+, not some high end FX or Opteron

Thanks for all the replies.
I've decided for the MSI K8N Neo 2 mb & AMD 64 3500+ cpu.
$405. combo at zipzoomfly.com, but out of stock for now.

Best wishes,
Olin

Why you say hard to find Northwoods now?
Intel just recently (last week) announced the disconinuation of the Pentium 2.
The northwood will still be manufactured and sold for years to come.

I seem to remember some people on this forum saying that the northwoods are being phased out and replaced with prescott's. That's the only reason why I said that.

They don't give those out anymore :( My 3200+ has a cheapo Alum POS. AMD has to cut corners somewhere to keep the chips so low priced :)

The cooler I got with my retail 3400+ Clawhammer is the all aluminum one, but the fan is extremely quiet and the chip stays plenty cool even while gaming for hours in HL2. If it is cheaper than the copper coolers and allows AMD to sell their chips for a little less then I say more power to 'em!

Yeah I'd say the cooler isn't a big deal at all, especially considering when I bought my skt754 3000+ nearly a year ago it was $240 shipped ;)
