AMD or Intel...Give construction non-flaming suggestions please

Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while on these forums, never really posting. I have a situation. For my next computer, it basically comes down to the Intel P4 3 GHz or the AMD Athlon XP 3000+...can't decide what to get. Can you help me?

Also, if you want to criticize/comment on the other components, please .

I have already bought some of these components, but the motherboard, CPU, video card, primary hard drive(s) and memory remains unpurchased until I can make up my decision.

AnandTech has published reviews of both of those processors. I suggest you read those.

Read the THG P4 800 FSB article, look at the benchmarks, and decide which is the better value for money. For gaming the AMD 3000+ is still priced higher than its true PR rating (should be 2600+ for games) but it's pretty close now.

A poll would have been worse. Just read the existing reviews and search for the already existing flamewars.....errr, I mean discussions.

Some apps Intel's have edge on, some AMD do, best to look at what you use, and go through benchmark's and budget accordingly.

By the way, I'd rather get the Logitech Z560 instead of the Klipsch Promedia 2.1. They sound just as good and you get surround sound, and they're cheaper.

I will say just this and run to my storm cellar. I looked at both systems you have priced out on New Egg. The Intel seems just slightly cheeper so go with it. BOTH systems would be just fine for anything you would throw at them. There would be little differences in BENCHMARKS from one to the other but for probably anything you will do with your system both Processors/systems you have specked out would do great. Get the least expensive of the two which in this case seems to be the Intel system. I think you will be happy either way but saving a few $$$ is nice too.

I've read Tom's Hardware's comparision, and I'm deciding to go with the Intel.

Shady, what's wrong with the Xaser III? And what case would you recommend instead?

Well, you do get speakers with the AMD system, giving it the edge, but other than that do this: write Intel on a piece of paper, do the same with another piece of paper but write AMD on it. Put both pieces into a hat, pull out 1 piece, buy that system. Unless you do some very specific tasks, the difference just doesn't matter IMO.

Let me answer it simply:

Usually, it comes down to this. AMD gets low end to enthusiast market and Intel gets high end. Atleast thats how it stands now. High end is basically the 2.4C processor and up where Intel is dominating right now. Since you're going for high end stuff, just get Intel unless you want to try out AMD.

I run an intel 3 ghz system now and get the same performance as my 2.3ghz AMD except that system I had $100 left over for another 512 of nice ram. I'm just to lazy to switch back. really I think they are quite similar right now.

next time, guess correctly, obviously you need to mark some x's off on urself now for tryin to crash a thread.

as for your systemm, go with watever one you want. intel = name brand, amd = off brand. both very good. both excellent. put um in a hat, flip it around and pick one out.
