amd opteron

When you look at the specs a 146,246 and 846 opteron are the same.If there is a difference.why are the specs the same?
 
Yes: They all run at the same speed (i.e. 146/246/846), but the 2xxx has more Hypertransport links (internally, compared to the 1xx) in order to communicate with another CPU, while the 8xx series has the most of all, allowing for greater expandability.

1xx series - will only run in single CPU-configuration

2xx series - will run in either single or dual configuration

8xx series - will run in single, dual, quad, or 8-way configurations
 
Actualy they all have the same HT links, and come from the exact same silicon, they just disable it to match the model.

Anandtech wrote an article on december 17th 2003 ( opteron vs xeon)and whoever wrote the article said there was no stopping an opteron 100 series from working in a dual processor environment.The info thet you sent to me,i was aware of it.I am not the type that only rely on what AMD is saying after all the company spent lots of money for reseach therefore some info will never be available to the public.I gues i do not want to pay 100 dollars more for a 200 series if there is a way for the 100 series to do it.

I am interested in the 146 and Mwave.com sells the 146 for 238.00 and the 246 for 337.00.please send me a link if you know where i can get it on line for less.
 
Not to turn this into a for sale thread, but I have a pair of NEW 144's for $100 each shipped.

Back on topic, these may meet Mr. Happy Mod if the motivation hits me. I'm just too lazy to pull my 242's out to test a pair of 144's. These were so cheap, I'm considering whether they can be "back-modded" into 939 pin chips and slapped into a mobo. They ought to perfrom like an A64 3000+ with 1MB of L2 chache.

I'm looking for someone geeky enough to make these work in a dual proc setup.

i am sure that someone out there knows are to make them perform in that capacity.Not to turn this into a sell speech, i have a pair of 146 200.00 dollars ship
 
All of the Opterons have the HT links, the difference is coherent links v. non-coherent. 100 series has no coherent link * Coherent links are used to communicate cache-coherency information between multiple processors* so good luck trying to use them MP because it is likely physically disabled on-chip like hyperthreading and we have all seen how successful enabling that on the CPUs that had it disabled was....or rather wasn't 😉 200 series has 1 coherent link, and 800 series has 3 coherent links, which IRCC it only uses 2 of them for coherency.

I got that from reading THG long time ago I think. Not sure. Can someone clarify.

I think its more like:
1xx = 0 links(2^0=1 cpu)*
2xx = 1 Link(2^1=2 cpus)
8xx = 3 links(2^3=8 cpus)



*=They actually all have 1 link to talk to the rest of the system, but I am talking about HT links to other CPUs.
 
No. Opteron 1xx series will only work in single-cpu mode.
Should you wish dual processors, get 2xx series.
Multiprocesor, 8xx.
