Is the AMD Opteron CPU worth buying right now? Can it run all current 32-bit apps just as well as the latest Athlon XP 3000 and Pentium 4 3.06 GHz? I saw the price for it on AMD's web site being in three different models with significantly different prices for each model: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Weblets/0,,7832_8366_609,00.html. Do you know what the difference is between these different model numbers? The price difference is tremendous! Are a lot of companies going to start to write software that is optimized for this CPU and quit making lots of software for the current 32-bit CPUs within the next year? I am asking these questions for a desktop based PC I plan to construct.

you'll get all the answers you can handle there.

short answer: unless you have so much money you wouldn't mind sending me a $100 for fun, or unless you plan on server-ing something, save your money.
