Why is everyone so Opteron crazy??
Why are they soo much better than the x2's and other AMD 64's??

Becuase they have twice the cache, overclock either amazingly (with the right stepping) or very well, and are server chips, meaning that they are made to be more reliable, and are rated for higher temperatures. On top of this, there are all kinds of rumors flying around that S939 Opterons will no longer be sold to the public in the very near future.

Have you ever even HEARD of xtremesystems?

I wouldn't say they are rated a higher temperature they do put out alot more heat than the venice or winchester when you compare those to single core opteron. Pepole are crazy because of the price and the ability to overclock for cheaper than you would be able to if you were to buy an X2 processor

I called them this morning and they advised they had about 100 of them in stock. I went ahead and bought one. We'll see how long they take this time...

You're assuming they're still going to be here.

Rumor is AMD isn't happy these are being used in consumer boards and will be limiting supply only to OEM systembuilders.

Word yo

Definitely call before you place an order online. Their site doesn't update inventory in real time and it'll take 'em a while to let you know if its OOS.

another thing to consider is that opteron OEM CPUs have a one year warrunty unlike "normal retail" chips. As for the rumors, well I don't know but anacdotally it does seem that the X2 sales are being erroded by these optys.

BTW OEM chips are supposed to be extinct soon for retail, but perhaps the Optys that end up in the retail chain come from system builders, perhaps their will continue to be OEM Optys while SC and DC A64s drie up.

How loud is the fan noise on these? The reason is because I almost purchased a Sanyo Denki fan for one of these Opterons before, and it was really really loud. I love the high oc potential, but not at the cost of a loud fan noise! Thanks.
