ZZF has 165 for $311
NewEgg has 3800+ for $322

First gaming rig build for a friend and intend to do some overclock. Heating may be a concern since I may go with SLI config later on. Which one is the best bang for the buck? My head seems to think 3800+ since it runs cooler but can't seem to make up my mind. Plz help

Its pretty simple ....

The Opteron is a little cheaper, has twice the L2 cache, and will clock higher at stock voltages.

It looks to me like the better value would be the Opty. However, you would probably be happy with either one. If you can find an X2 3800 somewhere for less than the Opty, then jump on the deal. Otherwise, I'd buy the Opteron. After-all, the "game" in my neck of the woods is to see who can build the best system for the least amount of money.

I agree 100% extra cache is nice on the opty but really a small issue

but if you can get twice the cache for cheaper, why not. If you arent overclocking, they are about equal, the 3800 might be a little faster, but if you are overclocking, even just a little, go with the 165

Both are good choices. I'd go with the cheapest priced proc shipped to my house.

I would do the Opteron, especially since the newest steppings, weeks 0546 and 0547, seem to be great. Most get to 2.6 at stock or near stock voltages, and a lot go further.

I have no choice now since Monarch Comp has the Opty for $275 in a combo package (w/ a mobo (extra$$$)). Thx for all inputs.
