AMD OC Q

OK, looking for a little advice. I am building a new system based on an AMD processor. Here's where I need some help. I plan to get an Abit KT7 (non RAID). Here's the processor situation. I have a friend that will sell me a Duron 600@900. I am considering taking my chances with a new processor and seeing how high I can go. Now, I would love to have a tbird, but will settle for a Duron. I was considering getting the 750 and going for 1 GHz. What are the success rates for this? What processor would have the best chance at going to 1GHz?

I am replacing a celeron 366@550. So I want to get as high as possible. I do know that results may vary...

Forgot to mention, I am planning on getting the Alpha PAL6035 or a GW FOP32-1, depending on what the stock is on the Alpha (would prefer one of them).

Thanks

1. the 750 is very likely to hit 1000 mghz! people have been having good luck.
If not, you'll mostly likely hit around 900-950 @ 1.85V.

2. A duron @ 1000 = tbird @ 900. So #'s dont mean everything.

3. Make sure you have PC-133 ram. These processors and the claims of their speeds, are only due
to the good pc-133 ram used with it.

ie.

My celeron 633 @ 980 was just as fast as my duron @950 using pc-100 cas 3 ram.

switched to pc-133 cas 3 and it SMOKES the celeron.

Very important thing to consider!

I picked up some generic PC133 RAM (well PNY), with infineon chips.

So basically, I have to decide if the extra perfomance from the Tbird is worth the extra money... I may just order the 1GHz special from AZZO.com.... 🙂 I dunno, such a difficult decision. heh.

Almost any duron 600 will hit 1G with a little thermal paste but I suggest arctic silver...expensive (13 bucks) but worth it. I have heard many 750 Tbirds not going over 900 so unless you are an extreme gamer (which you probably aren't or you would have looked at a 900 going for 1.1 to 1.2) go for the duron since you only have ata 66 capability anyhow.

Forgiven's 2cents

I do play games wouldn't consider myself a 'serious' gamer, but more than a 'casual' gamer. The main reason I am looking at the 750 is price. I am trying to keep the cost down (CPU+Mobo+HSF < $300 US).

I think I may take my chances with the 600 and go for the gig. 🙂 Unless someone else has a better suggestion. 🙂

Thanks

forgiven,
Not any Duron 600 will get to a Gig. The ones being made now have a good chance, but it still is far from a guarantee. Check www.ocworkbench.com. They have some intersting stats on Duron OCs.

As for the comment on ATA66 crippling a Tbird, that is not true. The memory subsystem is what would cripple a Duron, since it has less L2 cache. Anyway, ATA66 and ATA100 don't make that much of a difference. They are both IDE, and currently most drives hardly take advantage of ATA66.

Personally, I would go for the Duron 600 and see how far it will go. $60 is darn cheap for a CPU that will thrash any Celeron.
