AMD Newbie question

Lifer
I have always been an Intel PC builder and have built dozens of intel based systems. Recently I aquired an AMD Athlon 2000 chip and am interested in building an AMD system. The chip came from a POS HP pc whose mobo literally blew all the capacitors. I gave the chip to a friend of mine who tested it and said the chip is fine. The mobo it was in that died was some msi nforce socket 462 board. My AMD newbie questions are this: 1. Is socket A and socket 462 the same? 2. I dont want to spend a bundle on a mobo for a 2000mhz amd chip so what are some good nforce boards that this chip can use? I have tons of DDR pc2700 sticks.

Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Question 1: Yes
Question 2: Both the ASUS A7N8X & ABIT NF7-S seem to be popular. I would say any thing that is made by Abit or Asus.

Yes, Socket A and 462 are the same. Any Nforce board will work, Sis, and VIA boards with a 133mhz fsb will also work.

BTW, the Athlon 2000 is not 2000 mhz, just an equivalent to it.

I know, its only 1600 or so, right?

1667MHz actually. I'd go for an Abit NF7-S (about $90 at Newegg).

About that yes.

And contrary to what some belive you can have both.😀

I have this computer, with an AMD cpu and another computer with Intel cpu's connected to the same KVM.😉 They did not anialiate each other or cause a rip in the space time continuum.
