AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Rory P. Read, 49, President and Chief Executive Officer of AMD, effective today. Mr. Read has also been appointed to the Company’s board of directors.

Read joins AMD from Lenovo Group, Ltd., where he was most recently President and Chief Operating Officer responsible for leading day-to-day global operations while overseeing the development and implementation of the company’s growth strategy.

Never heard of the guy, though I'm not exactly in the know about that kind of stuff. Now let's see what the market will think. So far a mild increase in an otherwise flat tech market this morning.

It's good that AMD has finally come to a conclusion in the search for a new CEO.

I have no special knowledge of mr. Lead, but his merrits from Lenovo seems impressive. I think this is a good day for AMD.

Well if nothing else he's at least coming from a decent company in the same sector. Haven't heard of him though, hope it turns out well for AMD.

In what appears to be a fantastically powerful move, chip designer AMD is expected to announce that it has secured Lenovo’s Chief Operating officer as its new CEO.
KitGuru digs a little deeper into what this will mean for AMD specifically and the industry overall.
Reed recruitment anyone ?

IBM veteran, Rory Reed was the man behind much of Lenovo’s successful integration of the PC inventor’s brand with the Chinese government’s darling brand.

While AMD could not possibly have known that HP was going to put its hands in the air, surrender and run like rabbits from the PC market – the acquisition of someone like Reed will look like a master stroke to any outside observers.

The reason people buy corporate brands like HP, is for stability. The moment that they disappear, people get nervous. At times like that, companies with massive potential, like Lenovo, can step forward and really stake a claim.

The move looks powerful and, assuming that it has been done amicably, will help cement relationships between AMD and one of the world’s biggest users of its products.

KitGuru says: Let’s wait and see if the share of Intel processors inside Lenovo systems drops as fast as HP’s stock did after Leo announced his firms new strategy. Also, let’s see how long it takes Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal to catch up with this story.

Kitkuru seems to think its a smart move.
This undoubtly will make relations with Lenovo better.

And Rory Reed did do a good job with Lenovo, so why wouldnt he with AMD as well?

I see this as a good move for AMD and I hope that the new CEO will help even the competition between AMD and Intel (or give AMD a better chance of success with a different business strategy).

The guy is definitely going to be well connected with the OEM industry, I see this as a net positive for AMD.

The only red flag here to me is that I hope he doesn't do a Stephen Elop or a Carly Fiorina to AMD.

The other concern I have had all along these past 8 months since Dirk was fired is that I am just surprised that out of 11,000 employees within AMD the BoD did not feel it could find one employee qualified enough to manage AMD.

What does that say about the BoD's confidence in team AMD? "You guy's are great, keep up the good work, but yeah, we wouldn't dare risk the future of the company by placing it in the hands of any one of you ever again D: !"

That superficial concern aside, I'm sure the new CEO is going to do wild and crazy things to AMD, obviously the BoD was not looking for someone who was going to come in and do the status quo since the status quo is what they fired...will those things be good for us PC enthusiasts and consumers?

Earlier this year I was looking through some website where people posted pros and cons of working at their company, and more than one person from AMD listed as con the tendency to fill high-level management positions by importing instead of promoting from within. So it appears to be a long standing issue not limited to just this CEO search.

Funny how the guys name has already been misspelled at least twice on this thread.

I'm selling my AMD stock!

I cant give investing advice but I must point out that I'm seeing a very strong potential buy signal on the weekly chart. It is targetting well over $8. AMD Jan 12 $7.50 calls are currently trading at about 60 cents. If AMD goes to $8 in the next 6 weeks those calls will triple. I would hedge with october $6 puts @ 42 cents.

Hopefully this will be a Dirk or Sanders ceo and not a Ruin ceo. :\

Ruiz had a history of destroying companies. Read has a history of success. I just saw the article about this on daily tech, and I read the following:

I used to work at Lenovo, and have met Rory on numerous occasions. Of all the executives I've met over the years, he was one of the most down to earth and gracious to those of us that worked in the trenches with customers. He is a good leader, and this is a significant loss for Lenovo.

I can't imagine that too many people had anything similarly positive to say about mr ruiz.

I liked this headline , lol

Unfortunately Bulldozer is like the Predator when in camouflaged mode. Its invisible 🙂

I could not agree with you more as to the differences between the resumes of Ruiz and Read. As one of the people with a sworn blood feud against Hector, I am certainly among those who don't have anything positive to say about him and are frankly surprised why he isn't in a federal pen. As for Read, I'm sure he's a nice enough guy but I doubt that anyone who didn't rise from the dead 2 millennia ago can salvage what is increasingly looking like a BD bloodbath coming up. It would be great if Read could turn water into silicon and feed the multitudes with 32nm SOI, but (IMHO) BD looks like it's going to be a typical AMD case of too little, too wrong, and too late.😡 Besides, it seems that Read was born in Barcelona, not Bethlehem. 😀

Did anyone watch that video of Rory making this speech?

I was kinda surprised how much he reminded me of Dirk TBH.

It was kinda of like the juxtaposition of watching Steve Jobs, slick and charismatic at a convention speech, and then transitioning to watching Steve Ballmer of Microsoft attempting to be all hip, cool, and passionate like Jobs.

Rory wasn't Ballmer bad, but he was clearly trying to be Jobs'esque and I hope it worked in real-life because it really failed to transfer through to the video I watched.

I do have the highest hopes for Rory and AMD though, I just hope it wasn't too late.

IIRC they asked Seifert to do the job, but he only wanted to be interim CEO. OTOH he has been imported before 😉

I'm glad he didn't take it. His best days are well behind him in San Fran. He went a miserable 16-32 with the Panthers. 😀

I will once again point out that Ruiz orchestrated the ATI purchase, which turned out to be one of the most important things AMD has ever done, it was vital to their survival.

Too bad Hector made so many other blunders during his tenure. BTW, Ruiz was never charged with any crime.

Hector looks like a bad-ass to me 😀
