You had me worried there bud .... I kept hoping that you would see that I said repeatedly that you should download winsockfix before you proceeded on. I knew, because of your winsock infection, you were on shaky grounds. Anyway .... you're back. Have you performed the other fixes yet? I need a new HJT log if you have. If you haven't ..... thats ok too. I'd like to make sure we cured your winsock infection so I can breath easier as you continue on. Sooooo .... can you post a new HJT log please?

Ok, we're getting closer. Lets run HJT again and this time put a check by the following entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SrchfstUpdate] C:\WINNT\srchupdt.exe

Click "fix"

Reboot into safemode again and search for the following files:

C:\WINNT\system32\UMonit2k.exe
C:\WINNT\srchupdt.exe

You may have to open task manager and endtask UMonit2k.exe in order to delete.

Reboot, take a test drive for a bit then post one more log. You should be clean but let me check to be sure.

Good news .... your log is clean! Hows things running for you now?

As for scsi ... I don't have a lot of experience with it so I'll step aside and let mechBgon step in. Send him a private message if you'd like but ask that he helps you in the public forum since his answers may prove helpful for others.

Thanks a bunch, whats my next step? To invest in a hardware type firewall? Which one do you recommend that is user friendly.

Your welcome ....

At the bare minimum, you should download something along the lines of ZoneAlarm's free software firewall. Its highly configurable and you can easily deny traffic if you don't know what its for. A router is a great choice, (but I still would suggest you use ZoneAlarm as well) since they aren't expensive and in the case of a mail in rebate, sometimes just about free. I like my Linksys BEFSR41, but I'm not sure this model is even still available since mine is about 2 1/2 yrs old. D-link and Netgear also seem to be popular choices. It wouldn't hurt to take a poll over in the networking section of this board and get some feedback on routers either. They may help you make a better informed choice.

You should also plan on running spybot s&d at least once a week. Be sure to update it first, then close out all browser windows before proceeding with the scan. Java Cool's spyware blaster is another nice freeware program that can actually keep spyware from installing on your machine.

Consider making another user account for your daily activities, giving it only "user rights" and don't grant it permission to install anything. This adds another layer of protection since the stuff you had more than likely got there without your knowledge anyway.

On top of that, make sure you keep critical security patches up to date. Plan on a weekly trip to windows update. Baseline security analyser is also a great free tool. It checks for patches that windows update won't.

Well, all for now .... its bed time for me. Please feel free to ask more questions if you need. I'll answer them as soon as I can.
