amd mobile xp.. opinions?

I'm looking to upgrade my current 2.2 northwood system to something with a bit more punch.. but I don't want to spend more than $150 on mobo+cpu. I was looking towards overclocking a mobile xp because that seems to be a damn nice bang for the buck. Also, I wouldn't really need to buy new ram because I could just screw with the mutiplier and not have to deal with the fsb as much. Opinions anybody?

For $150 you can get an A64 mobo combo that will outperform any Athlon Mobile XP.

Check hotdeals forum here or check out all the usual retailers to see who has the best combo on sale.

Not for $150. You can get a basic MSI, Shuttle XP board with a mobile XP for about $150. But you got no shot at getting a A64 and board for $150. IF there is such a deal he is right, but I have never seen such a deal.

There are at least 2 people selling A64 combos in the For sale/trade forum for $150.00

Well I assume we were talking retail.

ya screw xp mobiles. i mean they ok fast when up around 2.5 but A64's lay waste to them 400mhz lower. And I'm not just talking benchmarks either. they "feel" fast and snappy due to 40ns mem latency vs. 120ns for XP's. 3x slower.

I own 2 XP mobiles over 2500Mhz and feel even stock, 1.8, I prefer a A64.

then we get into heat and future. Athlon XP's produce an insane amount overclocked, A64's don't. Athlon XP's will never run Windows XP-64. A64's will. Athlon XP's require loud fans to overclock. A64's don't.

What mobo you got now? There are some real attractive P4 OCing options depending.🙂 This way you won't even have to buy a new mobo.

What you said is true for the most part, but I'm using a Mobile XP and I'm getting 78ns mem latency. Still not as good as A64, but considering I paid $80 for a 1.8 ghz chip that I'm running stable at 2.5ghz, I'm pretty happy with it. And it's still fast enough to handle all the latest games.

It's true, you get a lot of bang for the buck with an overclocked Mobile XP. If I had it to do over again, I would probably keep my XP2500+ and not upgrade to an Athlon 64 yet and save $350 because the performance difference isn't THAT huge. But I paid for the fun of having new stuff to play with, not necessarily the performance. 🙂

Yep, skt754 Sempr0n is the new 32bit budget king, until the 939 variant hits in volume anyways. It doesn't trash performance to use a divider like it does with nF2 either. Retail 2600+ is only $76 shipped which, means no cooler to buy like with the XP-M either. Couple it with the 8KDA3J for $73.95 shipped@ZZF and you have a fast $150 combo.

I think a Sempron 64 2800+ (about $80) on a S754 board would be better. The 2800+ is a 256k part, and the new ones do have 64 bit enabled. XP-M's don't get much cheaper than $80, so the price is comparable, but the Sempron is a K8.

Well, this is an older thread. I think you can buy a 64bit Sempron for like $65 or so...., socket 754.

Anyway, help you guys! I have xp-M 2600+ that I used to be able to hit 2.5 (200x12.5) with 1.725Vcore. Stable all day and all night. I don't know if this is coincidental or if I screwed up, but I tried to "underclock" my cpu because I hear this is a good way to "age" your cpu for a better oc. Well, now, it won't even do 2.3 (200x11.5) at 1.65Vcore! I used to be able to do this with 1.55Vcore! I thought it was the power supply! I am using TTGI 480 Watt power supply. I have tried it on 2 different ones. I have examined my motherboard. No capacitor blow ups. What do you think you guys? Is my CPU dying? Is there such thing?

LOL. I was just about to post something when I read my own post from uh... 4 months ago!

Anyway, I never heard of a cpu dying from an underclock. Did you check all the settings like ram frequency/timings, all the voltage settings, etc? You have to run some tests like prime95 and memtest to see what could be causing the instability. Also, the ambient temps could affect this too.
