AMD Mobile AthlonXP different architecture?

I know the mobile version of the AthlonXP runs at lower voltage...but I seem to remember it being mentioned that some pipelines are cut on the mobile AhtlonXP vs. the normal AthlonXP cpu's or something like that...basically it was saying something like the performance on the mobile cpu's are very slightly crippled? Any insight? I want to upgrade from my current AthlonXP to a mobile AthlonXP so I can run 2400mhz stable? Also, what stepping cpu do you recommend. Thanks in advance !

The mobile chips are physically identical to the desktop versions, except they run at a default voltage of 1.45v instead of 1.65v. There is no modification that cripples the mobile chips, and the performance is the same for mobile and desktop chip running at the same speed (clock speed and FSB).

As far as the best stepping goes, it's the IQYHA from what I've read. The AQYHA stepping is good as well (that's what I've got with my XP-M 2600).

I ran a side-by-side comparison with two XP cpus, one a "Barton" and the other a "T-bred". They had an identical Sisoft score running at 2200Mhz, however when I ran a comparison to check their performance capability when loading Quake3 demos, the Barton was 5ms slower then the "T-bred". The other obvious difference was the cpu's idle power consumption, where the 5v rail on the Barton would measure at 4.99v vs the T-bred at 4.65v.

My conclusion is that the M-XP and the Barton XP are the same animal and that they are only differentiated at the factory by the M-XP's ability to run at lower voltages.

I'm pretty sure that the only physical difference between the two chips is the lack of an FSB lock on the mobile.

Not all of the Mobile Athlon XPs have the 512 KB cache.

Only the 2400+, 2500+, 2600+ models have the 512 KB L2 cache. If you can, pick up the 2400+.

They are all the same.

Yes, all mobile Bartons have 512k cache. Not all AMD mobile chips are of the Barton variety, but the ones that are will have the 512k.

No pipelines are cut. The performance is not crippled. The only difference is that the mobiles ones are selected to be mobile because they're of higher quality and can run at the same clock speed at lower votlages, or higher clock speeds at the same voltage.

IQYHA and IQYFA are the two best IIRC. Mine is an IQYHA @ 2.48 Ghz on 1.75 volts. It will run 2.4 Ghz on 1.65 volts though. I'm slowly taking it higher to find it's absolute maximum

I have a 2500+ that will run 2400MHz at 1.7v easily.
Currently running about 2300 because I need a new PSU.

Perhaps I'm getting greedy, but what is the best stepping / amd barton core-athonxp type CPU to get more than 2.4Ghz on standard air cooling of my small Shuttle XPC computer? Is 2.6Ghz asking too much? What's the jig?

So wheres the best place to buy a 2400M with that stepping these days? It would be a nice replacement for my XP1700 T-Bred which I would give to my Sons. (got it at SVC for under $50 last year)

dejacky, since you are already running 2.17GHz on a 196MHz fsb I wouldn't bother. I made the move over a year ago to a Barton 2500+ when they were unlocked and got 2300MHz. But I was already running a 2.2GHz Athlon and it didn't make much of a difference even with the extra L2 cache.

When prices drop some more my next upgrade will be the Athlon64.

Thanks for the honest insight rogue1979. But don't you think running 2.4-2.5Ghz on 214Mhz FSB would make things noticeably faster? Maybe even 223Mhz FSB speed My main concern is a cpu that will handle high fsb speeds better.

Yes, it will make some difference, but mostly in memory bandwidth applications like gaming. But your Geforce4 Ti4200 will only get a small boost from this, something faster like a 9700/9800 or 5900 would give you a noticable improvement.

These high powered video cards crave a high fsb with big memory bandwidth, the actual 200-300MHz from the cpu would not give as much performance boost as the extra 20-25MHz on the fsb speeds. I haven't updated my rigs in awhile and I have a 9700Pro @ 350/330. Your upgrade with a 9700 Pro would be good for maybe an extra 1000-1500 points in 3DMark2001, maybe 500-700 points for Futuremark2003. Not really noticable in most games, I updated mostly for Halo and Unreal 2004 which are the only games I play that my GF4's are actually getting slowed down in.

2.17Ghz has recently become unstable..i suspect my power supply to be the culprit, so now i only run at 2Ghz @ 191Mhz FSB. So, I was thinking that 2.4-2.5Ghz on a 222Mhz FSB stable speed would make the computer all around quicker. I'd also be upgrading to something like a Radeon 9800xt 128MB speed video card.
BUT, will my money be better spent upgrading to an INTEL Shuttle XPC that has been proven to overclock to 250Mhz FSB speed? I'm sure I could get a cheap pentium 4 and overclock for a better performanc/$ ratio? Thanks again

What sways to stay w/ the SN45G is its excellent onboard sound "Nvidia Soundstorm" and since I use the pci slot, I can't add an extra pci sound card in an intel system.

It's like confusing because it says the 2400+ is 1.8, and the 2500+ mobile is 1.83. Im like wtfh! For 33 mghz 20 bucks? I highly doubt that, whats the stock speed of the 2400+ mobile?
