so i've got about $300 in birthday money and i'm really not impressed with my recent prescott upgrade. i'm wanting more gaming oomph! right now i've got a 3.0e and i865pe motherboard. other parts i'm using:

1gb (512x2) ocz value pc3200 (running dual channel)
ati radeon 9800 pro
sb audigy 2
2x seagate ide hdds (i want a hitachi sata drive so onboard sata is a must)

i'd probably want a 3200+ at least (this should be much faster than my 3.0e in games right? that's mostly what i'm looking for). really what i want is a suggestion on a solid board. nforce? via? i've used via with intel in the past, i was mostly happy with it, but nforce seems to be the way to go. i don't want any problems with stability AT ALL. i don't overclock, i just want a SOLID board. i've had problems in the past with amd stability so it's not something i want to deal with again.

Go with an nForce3 250(or better, if you need the features) chipset, which is generally superior to current Via chipsets. Since you don't need to overclock, you could probably get by with the Chaintech VNF3 for $78 for S754. If you want dual channel memory though, you'll have to go with S939, for which I have no suggestions. You could get a 90nm 3000+ for S939 and overclock it some, but that's all up to you.
 
If you want to increase your gaming performance, you should probably upgrade your graphics card to a 6800 GT (after selling the 9800 Pro). The 3.0E is fine for now--a faster CPU generally doesn't make too much difference in gaming (unless the video card was crippled by what you had previously, which is not the case).

Yeah, I would also upgrade the video card to a 6800GT, you'll have a much bigger performance improvement than upgrading to a 3200+. The only CPU upgrade that might be worth it is a S939 3000+ and overclocking it to 2.5+GHz.
 
so everything i've read in every pro-amd thread about how amd is the best for gaming and a64 blazes in games is just bs? i have no probs doing a video card upgrade tho.

and i wouldn't bother with a mac if owning a pc caused my hands to fall off everytime i touched the keyboard. i want to play games and i've already played warcraft 3 thanks.

No, the stuff you've read about AMD isn't BS--it's just that it's a pointless upgrade right now. Not worth the expense to change your platform even to get 10% more gaming performance out of a new CPU, if that. And of course, remember the computer is only as fast as its slowest component pertinent to your task, and a 3.0E/6800 GT system is more balanced and will perform a lot better than a 3200/9800P.
 
i agree with most of the other guys... i mean the athlon64 is a much better gaming cpu then the p4, but with your current system you would get the most improvement if you upgraded video card.
