Dirk was fired for not having a mobile strategy.

To be fair, the pittance they sold their mobile line to qualcomm for was insane considering how fruitful it's been for qualcomm.

But what can they do at this point? There's not much reason for them to jump into the ARM game, by the time they came out with a new design, they'll be competing against several very strong players (even stronger than now) and in a die shrink or two they can probably get bobcat (or a cut down version of it) ready for mobile. And really, the tablet market is the only mobile market they can aim at, ARM is a race to the bottom in costs and integration and AMD doesn't own a wireless business, and it'll be hard to license their IP when PowerVR already sells to everyone and most of the major vendors have their own in house graphics. AMD has no future as an ARM manufacturer, they're tied to x86, good or bad.

And look for Nvidia's strong determination to break into the market drive profits way down with rapid releases, the same way they did in the GPU market. Nvidia is probably at a disadvantage compared to the long term mobile chip makers in terms of design and partnerships, but their rapid release cycle will make things tough on their competitors to make a profit.
