No, that's the 2014 AMD, the one that does not have enough resources to develop entire chips unless paid up front by the customer. You can bet your money that AMD will buy a lot more of IP blocks in the future.

Really? Who paid for Kaveri, Jaguar, GCN, Steamroller, Kabini, Temash?

Damn right AMD will incorporate whatever IP makes sense, or that their semi custom customers request in their silicon. Kind of defeats the purpose of a semi custom BU otherwise don't you thin? You FAIL.

I think you understand that most of these designs were already developed or at least funded before Rory arrived. Only in 2015 you'll see projects started under Rory's tenure reaching the market.

Ed: They went as far as licensing the entire CPU core for their new ARM SoC.

So you're suggesting that the 1000's of engineers at AMD are going to sit idle, staring out the window while the team in India design products out of existing or purchased IP? They probably didn't need to hire Jim Keller, Raja Koduri, John Gustafson and others then.

that AMD are going 100% semi custom. If that's the case you haven't been paying attention. Just because AMD will reuse existing IP where it makes sense, doesn't mean more isn't in development.

implying they aren't developing anything in house. You couldn't be more wrong.

This thread is about embedding Trustonic security. I suppose they could waste $7B on a company like McAfee, but that seems like extremely poor business.

A 'veiled insult to intel'? Like what for example? If I have more stuff to say about intel, I can guarantee it won't be in the form of a guise. But this thread is (was, until 2 trolls wandered in to derail) about TEE security.

Has nobody ever taught you that two wrongs don't make a right? It wouldn't both me, except that everytime there's an interesting technical discussion going, somebody comes in and derails that thread by baiting people into an Intel vs. --- argument.

Yes in case you missed it, it's normally the AMD guys starting tech threads then the (same) Intel guys come in and bait people into an AMD vs Intel argument.

Don't you think that rounding on the OP in this instance after he was trolled by two people in a completely legitimate tech thread makes you out to be a jerk?

Now you're getting my ire. For what? Double standards, simple as that. It's ridiculous to have a go at piesquared in this thread no matter what you think of him, and simply makes you as bad as the other two.
 
If you guys don't stop the trolling, peronal comments, and mention of Intel in an AMD thread, I will lock this, no more warnings.

It's a trade off, it means that the authentication will be safe even if the operating system is compromised and in this case you would thank god for not being in control of your authentication system. OTOH you won't need to compromise the operating system if you can directly attack the hardware. Also while it's much harder to crack a hardware protection, once it's done the fix is much harder to implement.

Where things are going? A lot of security stuff already happens on hardware. VTx, VTd, TXT, smart cards... I do expect hardware to play a stronger role in security.

This is a correct move from AMD. Brings extra features to their chips without much cash outflow in the development stage. Exactly what a cash strapped company needs. As their cash situation further deteriorates, I expect them to integrate more and more IP in their chips. A security chip, a vanilla ARM core... let's see where things will go.

I don't think anyone looks for veiled insults, whether they are pro-AMD, pro-nvidia, or what have you. I don't think anyone cares about anyone else being a fan of a company. I sure don't - if someone is an AMD fan, good for them. I like their GPUs, but dislike their CPUs. That being said, the post history of an individual says it all really.
