So this finally looks like my next laptop processor 🙂
You still get low power if set correctly (underclocked) but can have higher performance when needed.

I work mostly plugged in on my i5 7400HQ laptop and only complain I have is fan noise when fully taxed. Battery life in power save is good and performance for my needs is great. New Ryzen will save more power and be quite a bit faster in heavy MT workloads, not to mention graphics.

Bring it on for under $1000 in good chasis please!
 
A am rather unfamiliar with laptop components in general, how does these laptop parts compare to say a ryzen 3, 2200g desktop part?

Ryzen 2500U is a mobile equivalent of 2200G, however at much lower TDP (cTDP 12-25W vs 65W) and DDR4-2400 as the fastest memory.
Similarly 2700U is comparable to 2400G - it have a bit weaker IGP (640 SP vs 704).

2500U is a 4C/8T APU, at 25W it should score a little more than 500 in CB R15, to compare with the 2200G 480 score, this is due to SMT and also to the 2200G being quite loosely binned compared to a 2400G FI, IRCC it is set at 15-20% higher voltage.

2200G can run it's CPU and GPU at full clocks (3.75GHz CPU, 1100MHz iGPU) from it's 65W TDP, while 2500U-2700U at 25W can only run CPU or GPU, at almost full clocks; or at significantly lower clocks if both CPU and GPU are loaded (~2.5GHz CPU, ~750MHz iGPU). Much lower if it is configured for 12W or 15W.
 
I thought these things would be selling like hotcakes, but it seems as if you still have to go out of your way a bit to find one that is configured properly. Maybe with the rumored Intel chip shortage and the soon to be released 2600H/2800H, they will sell more.

I still can't help but cringe when I see how OEM's configure some of these though. 5400 RPM drives, 720p screens, or a 2700U with an RX 540! According to Notebookcheck, Vega 11 is faster than the RX 540! Do these guys do any research? Or (more likely), do they have pallets full of otherwise unsellable RX 540's they are looking to unload?

I have no immediate need for a laptop. If I did though, I would be all over a 2600H or maybe a 2800H.

To be fair, 720p does seem to be hard to find. HDD's shouldn't really be a thing in laptops anymore except the absolute cheapest. I don't get the point of a dGPU with Raven Ridge at all. I have seen some 2500U's with RX 560's which is at least a positive step but I don't see the value especially for the added power cost.

Last X-Mas I tried to get my inlaw to get one of the x360s when it was sub $700. He wanted Intel because "a new chip sounds risky". He also did not want an SSD because "1 TB of space wont fill up as fast so it wont slow down as much in the long run". That is why you see what you see. Old people are stubborn.
