AMD is no name brand

Well, my friend is going to purchase a new P4 system and that's what he said when i recommended AMD. ( he's tight on budget)

He also said computers are build for Intel.

Ironically, he studies computer engineering with me and fixes computer for various companies

I recommend AMD to anyone who asks my opinion or help in specing a new system. Most of these people get an Intel based system. They would have gotten more for their money if they had gone AMD. Hey, the Intel systems meet their needs, what more can you ask.

<< the Intel systems meet their needs, what more can you ask. >>

the thing is his budget is only $800, and he wants P4 1.8 + RAMBUS 😀

Well, try to teach him, maybe even show him some benchmarks + pricewatch prices. If that doesn't convince him, let the pricetag and performance of your Athlon XP smoke his equally clocked (yet more expensive) P4 😛

my friend is buying a 1.6 ghz p4 system with 128 megs SDRAM (old, I know) for $600, and it would be more expensive but he knows the owner of the computer shop building it.

For around $500, Im upgrading my system to at least an Athlon XP 1800 with 256 megs DDR RAM, and my computer will kick his computer's ass.

He and many other people are the type of people who think that if a p4 has a higher GHz number than an Athlon, it's automatically better, however that is not the case, and higher GHz doesnt mean its better. Some people will never learn.......

You can build a 2.4/2.5GHz P4(overclocked 1.8AGHz, P4T-E or TH7-II motherboard and 512MB of RDRAM)system for less then $600 that will spank a 1800XP+.

I dunno bout nice, but you can definately build one =P.

Athlon's are so cheap, allow you to buy other expensive parts.

As far as the corporate/server market is concerned, AMD is no brand name. If yer friend does mainly corporate market things (and I'm guessing he is since he is an engineer), it's understandable how he would think so.

Yeah, but you have to o/c it......

1.8 p4 + ddr $629:

<< Go to this link and click to customize the system in the middle ($1169).

Choose the 1 Yr Warranty.

Take off the monitor and speakers (ignore the incompatibilty messages).

Then you'll have a system like so:

Dimension® 4400 Series,Pentium® 4 Processor at 1.8 GHz DS4418G [461-4163]
256MB DDR SDRAM 256M [311-1282]
Dell® Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard EPUSBA [310-0731]
Please Select if Choosing Flat Panel Monitor Below NOMON [461-3456]
64MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X AGP Graphics Card with TV-Out 64NVMX [320-0164]
FREE Upgrade! 80GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive 80P [461-4921]
3.5 in Floppy Drive 3 [340-1927]
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition WHXP [313-7222] [420-3079]
Microsoft® Intellimouse® Explorer OM [310-0692]
10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet NIC CNET [430-5353]
56K Telephony Modem for Windows 56KWSXP [313-1583]
FREE UPGRADE! 16x/10x/40x CD-RW Drive with Roxio's Easy CD Creator® 16CDRWP [461-1635]
Integrated Audio IS [313-0847]
Select Monsoon Speakers Below DLWRSKP [461-3821]
Free Quicken, AOL, etc..

Total Cost = $689.00 (includes $50 off and free shipping).

The $75 coupon does _not_ work for some reason, but this is still a better deal than the other one for the 4400.

This config has 256mb DDR (vs 128mb), Intellimouse Explorer (vs regular Intellimouse), and 64mb GeForce2 (vs 16mb ATI Rage). I'm sure if you took the NIC and modem out it'd be even cheaper.

RobTheEnchanter

edit: if you choose the Logitech Mouse/keyboard combo, then unselect the Intellimouse, you can use the $75 off coupon (thanks LuS) ( 93805D3DA123 ), which will bring the new total to...

$629 !

Ripped from FW,

Your not going to overclock a XP?

Too bad 99% of the world doesn't overclock. 😉 Really now, overclocking is a non issue here, especially since barely a majority of the people here actually overclock 24/7, which is basically the only reason you'd get a 1.6A system anyway.

<< Ironically, he studies computer engineering and fixes computer for various companies >>

So that's why he should get an AMD?
Actually that's probably why he is getting an Intel chip.

AMD has only recentely got past the 'always need something else for it to work', 'hardware conflict' allure.
And that's mostly in the geek community. It's still prevalent in the corporate world.

I was an AMD fan for awhile because of the performance bang for the buck.
And I still believe its a fantastic chip, as long as you get the RIGHT motherboard.
Probably something he doesn't want to research or deal with.
The .2sec faster or 5fps extra that we dwell on in this community means absolutely nothing to 99% of the people out there.

But after becoming a network admin and having to deal with 2-4 year old AMD systems I can see where he's coming from.
It is such a headache trying to band-aid those things.
And its not necessarily that we can't get them working- its the amount of time needed to babysit them.
What I would give to change them all into solid, cool running, quiet, Intel based chipset/cpu combo's.

If he has cash to burn i wouldn't mind getting P4. But he wants to build a complete system for $800 (monitor, printer, webcam, ........etc)

<,Your not going to overclock a XP?>>

In a non-overclocking situation the XP would spank the 'wood. Keep in mind, a lot of people don't overclock, and that's not limited to casual users.

Here's a nice way to teach the n00bs about the AthlonXP 😉 It's taken from AMD's quantispeed tech-doc:

AMD Athlon? XP processor with QuantiSpeed? Architecture Analogies:

1. Adult and Child Walking
If a child and an adult are walking together, the child needs to take more steps to keep up with the adult. Since the adult has a longer stride than the child and travels further with each step. The child has to work harder?by moving faster?to try and keep up.

2. Automobile Engines
Two cars are in a race. The Blue Car has a 6-cylinder engine while the Green Car has a 9-cylinder engine. While the Blue Car?s engine works hard in terms of high RPMs, it doesn?t actually go all that fast down the road. In contrast, the Green Car?s more powerful engine doesn?t have to run at high RPMs. Yet on the road, the Green Car blows the doors off the Blue Car. The more powerful Green Car engine is designed to run efficiently and to deliver a faster, more powerful driving experience.

3. Bucket and Cup
You and a friend are out on the lake in a rowboat. At some point, you both notice that the boat is taking on water. Your friend starts bailing water with a cup while you start bailing water with a bucket. In a panic, your friend bails faster than you, but since your container is larger, you end up bailing more water in the same amount of time.

4. Cycling
Two cyclists ride together on 10-speed bikes. One cyclist uses the 10th gear, pedaling slower but moving faster down the road and covering more distance with each stroke. The other cyclist uses 1st gear and has to pedal like a lunatic to achieve even close to the same speed on the road and cover the same ground.

AGodspeed, I thought I was the biggest AMD zealot till I met you 😉 (I trust you understand that's a compliment)

Your right, I guess I have "overclock everything" on the brain.

"Your right, I guess I have "overclock everything" on the brain."

When someone asks me to make recommendation for a system, I ask if the person intends to overclock. So far no one has even known what overclocking means. Even though I show them that they will get more for their money with AMD they choose Intel anyway.
