AMD Hammer FSB Question

Good day

Does anyone know what the FSB will be for AMD's Hammer? It'd be nice to know if my DDR 333 will be re-usable with Hammer, or if I should plan to upgrade to DDR 400+/DDR II.

The Hammer won't have an FSB per say since the memory controller will be on-die. The Hammer's on-die memory controller will almost certainly be DDR at first so your RAM should work fine. Keep in mind that with the Hammer there will have to be different versions for different types of RAM (again due to the on-die memory controller) and with DDR-II not likely to hit critical mass before some time next year DDR will be the most available option.

Hmmm...interesting answer. Interesting enough to cause me to pose another question 🙂. For those purchasing a computer/computer parts right now, what memory would you recommend, DDR 266, 333, or 400, if they plan to upgrade to Hammer when it becomes available?

the fastest you can afford
there will aventually be ddr-2 implementation in the hammer systems
but apon release it will most likely be ddr333 or ddr400
 
most likely AMD will get the FSB as high as possible just so they can compete with the bandwidth the p4 has cause when dual ddr p4 boards get out, expect seeing 5 gb/s or more bandwidth on p4s
 
From what I understand, the initial Hammers will use a DDR333 memory controller. It won't be until Q4 '03 when they impliment a DDR-II controller into the die.
 
Forget the word FSB for the hammer, it doesn't exist. I suggest getting the HT and hammer papers. Check also the thread "Pentium 5? Amd has the hammer...." I wrote something there, but I am lazy to cut and paste 😉

 
According to tech news sites, such as CNET and The Register, the onchip memory controller on the Opterona (hammer) and next Athlona (clawhammer) will be clocked at 166MHz = DDR 333. Similary Pentium 4's now run at 166Mhz FSB, but it is quad-pumped making it 533MHz. Chips running at 200MHz FSB's won't be seen for awhile yet!
