AMD FX60 PC3200 DDR400

I am using this memory with an AMD FX60 on an Asus A8R32MVP - Deluxe board and am trying to raise my fsb but I can't seem to get it past something simple like 204 without loosening my timings. Right now I have the multi at 14 @ 2.8Ghz - do i need faster memory like DDR 550 or 600? I've looked for the OCZ PC4800 DDR600 modules but are no where to be seen... but do i need faster memory to raise my fsb without changing my divider from 200 down to 166 or 133...?

Thanks for the help :)

Probably, but that all depends on what RAM you own. Also, aren't you aware that using a RAM divider doesn't hurt the performance of Athlon 64's? Lastly, did you remeber to lower your HT multiplier?

I did lower the HT multi to 800Mhz

I am using OCZ Enhanced Latency Dual Channel DDR400 2.2.2.8 1t

so getting DDR 550 won't help?

No point in spending money on DDR these days, sorry.

Either loosen timings, or drop down one divider lower.

Performance hit will be more than made up for with the CPU speed you gain.

so right now i kept it at 2.8 by changing the multi to 11, raising the fsb to 255, and setting the divider to 166 with HT at 800 and you are saying i will see more of a performance gain from what hit? lowering the divider?

You're running 14x200, correct? (2.8 GHz DDR400 2-2-2)
Assuming you want to overclock higher, you have at least 3 options for what to do to increase your performance.

Obviously you've found your RAM cannot get much past 200 MHz 2-2-2.

Now normally, you'd need to either loosen timings (say run 2-3-2 or 3-3-2, 3-3-3, etc), or drop to a lower divider (say 166 divider) to be able to overclock higher.

But you have a chip with an unlocked multi, so you have a third option!
You could just bump up the multiplier to 15x200.

Basically, you need to prioritize CPU speed, & then worry about the RAM later.

Take the RAM out of the equation for now, use a lower divider.

Then see how far you get the CPU within whatever voltage/temps/speed goal you have.

Once you've got that figured out, then worry about the RAM.

Frankly, due to the unlocked multi, you have so many options for RAM speeds & timings it's ridiculous.

I'd try to keep the RAM @ 1:1 (i know, i know, that doesn't technically exist on AMD).
But anyway, keep it the same speed as the CPU if you can by employing the use of that unlocked multi...

Obviously, your max OC will end up being somewhere in between, so that's where you either decide to run a higher HTT (FSB) with looser timings, or a higher HTT (FSB) with lower RAM speed & tighter timings.

You can benchmark the different scenarios to decide which you like best for performance, but the difference won't be much regardless.

Thanks for the reply. I can run this at 3Ghz, but I get errors in prime95 and it seems a little too hot, up to 50's Celsius with voltage at 1.4; and the voltage is more than i hear is good for it.

I did find some cheap memory here:

and am going to give it a try. I can probably run the same figures as above but without dropping the divider to 166. So hopefully I'll get a little more out of this machine even though i've moved on to a new gaming rig.

Thanks again :)
