AMD FX-53 939 or AMD FX-53 940?

939. The only difference is that the 939 can use regular unregistered memory; same performance. And the 939 boards have an upgrade path; 940 is dead from what I've heard (for the enthusiast market anyways, I'm not sure about Opterons).

Of course the 3800+ is a better value, but nobody's stopping ya.

The unregistered memory will help performance a little, and it's less expensive. And of course the 939 socket will continue to be supported. 940 won't except for Opteron.

I would definitely say that the 3800+ or even 3500+ would be a better value, but the FX would probably be better for overclocking--it has a completely unlocked multiplier instead of a vanilla 64's top-locked multi.

Yup- those FXs play nice with their unlocked multiplier :D

Yeah, but seriously, how often do people want to increase their multipliers? Usually if people are FSB overclocking, they want to drop them.

some people arent capable of good fsb overclocking, so they have to resort to the multiplier also. jpeyton, you have a good point though.

Like others have said, 939 you can use unregistered memory... and that means that 940 you can ONLY use ECC memory, which is a lot more expensive, and slightly higher latency (because it checks for errors). So definitely go with 939.

The 3800 is like 50$ or so less so its not that much of a better value. For the performance, the FX-53 is the better cpu.

Actualy what I would suggest is to get a socket 940 Opteron 150, it's the exact same chip as the FX53 skt 940 but costs quite a bit less and would offset the price of the registered ram, w/ a socket 940 system you have a good upgrade path w/ more Opteron's down the road and genearly they are cheaper than the athlon 64 FX at the same clock speed. Just my 2 cents... hope this helps... fyi the opteron 150 only costs $638 retail or $618 OEM vs the $775 for the FX and it's the exact same chip except for the name.

I just can't see how everyone is rec'ing the Skt 939 FX53, it's $885, it's so overpriced compared to the other options it not even funny, and to top it off skt 940 has been around a lot longer and has better motherboard selection. Go for the Opteron 150! :) hehe
