The MSI B85M ECO is a nice motherboard, but be sure to know that it will accept the i3 4170, the i3 4130 is listed in the supported CPU's but no further than that- also get the latest BIOS for it if you can get it to boot up.

I assume either i3 will boot, it may just have the wrong name listed until after a bios update. It's not like it was a die shring or uarch change. Chances are pretty good it won't even need a bios update.

yeah they probably didn't update the list. Seeing that stocks sell fast on Amazon and Newegg I would expect it to come with the latest bios.

Correct me if I am wrong but the 4170 is simply the identical CPU as a 4130 just a higher clock right? hence should boot just fine?

http://us.msi.com/support/mb/B85M-ECO.html#support-cpu

says here it supports 4170 i3

Seeing the last bios update was December of 2014 I would expect to get the latest bios with this board cause these stuff sell fast on Amazon and Newegg

Yeah, that's correct. The 41xx are all the same, only differing in CPU clocks. The i3 43xx have slightly more cache and slightly higher clocks with on the integrated GPU.

^I dunno how I feel about that 8320E and its low clock

I see the FX 6300 is noticeably more powerful than an i3 in certain games. Sadly this graph does not compare the FX 6300 to a i3 4150 its the old ivy bridge i3 so its not a fair comparison. The FX 6300 is miles ahead of it.

Also you talk about AMD being ancient yeah I know this, and its a dead socket, but how does this new features in an intel CPU and socket affect me? Is it at the end of the day all about power consumed, performance in what you use? I don't care about USB 3.0
But I do have a new 256 GB Crucial SSD that I would like a sata that takes advantage of its power.

basically every FX can hit 4.3ghz without sweating. my 8310 for example. I really feel confident about the future having 8 cores vs if I'd gone with an i3

^ Nah I decided on the 4170 @ 3.7 GHZ already. Love the MSI ECO maiboard aswell.

Also the intel will play a million times better with DayZ

^ benchmarks are on this same page its the 4670K I meant. Matching the 8350 fx in witcher 3 etc

So the choice of FX 4350 vs 6300 is settled. But now we are onto choice between i3 4150 and FX 8320E both are close in price. hmmmmm

And the option of upgrading to a i7 in future as an upgrade path. hmmmmmm

If you are looking at the i3, look at the i3-4160 or i3-4170. They should not cost much more, and you get a bit more clockspeed. edit: just noticed you're looking at the 4170, smarter choice than the i3. I still think the 8320e has its merits, but let's face it, you have to cool that thing if you want to get the most out of it.

Also, if you can wait, Skylake i3s should launch sometime in September of this year. If I'm right, those chips might be the second coming of Jesu^H^H^H^H the Celeron 300a.

$110 i3 + FSB 100 to 133 on $50 basic H110 mobo = epic win.

$160 i3-K and $100+ Z170 mobo = nahforgetaboutit

The idea is that it won't have to be a k processor, and that it might be possible on H110 rather than Z170. So yeah, the first example is what we're looking at here. Knowing Intel, it may wind up being Z170 only . . .

Getting a free lunch out of Intel CPUs and chipsets is now harder than pulling teeth out of a hen (no, that overrated-to-hell G3258 doesn't count), so get used to disappointment.

Oh yeah I had a dual Celeron 700MHz OC'd to 1.1GHz, what a sick system it was.

Skylake Desktop Core i3 is scheduled for Q1 2016.

Seriously? That's unfortunate. Is it the non-k quads launching in September then?

Yeah I know, it ain't the way it used to be. Stupid market segmentation takin away all our fun . . .

Hahah dual Celerons, sweet. Did you do a wire mod?

can someone give me a suggestion as to what video card I should get? currently have HD 7850 1GB and the ram is very very limiting.

I wanna run SF5 and Killer Instinct for PC next year, but I don't know if I need 2 or 3GB

Or Geforce or Radeon

I've never met an FX owner that ran it at stock clock. One of the remaining perks of the FX is every single one of them is unlocked. So yeah, it's true the FX-6300 is faster at stock speed -- but very few FX's remain at stock speed.

One of the remaining perks of the FX is that it NEEDS to be overclocked to be even close to competitive. FTFY.

My 100% serious answer to this thread is that if these are your only 2 options then pc gaming isn't for you.
This isn't a knock against amd or the low end. It's that 2 bad options doesn't mean you pick one. Id save money and get a setup that lasts vs a stop gate measure.

I bought the i3 4160, this is pretty good for some years to come I am sure.

In the future I won't even need to change my board, a pain and annoyance aswell. I could just buy a devils canyon 12 threaded CPU in about 6 years from now when games actually need that much threads and I would have a excellent system just look at the poor improvement of 2500K sandy bridge to the skylake i5 6600k or whatever its called nobody in their right mind would sell a 2500k for a skylake i5.

The gaming performance I mean is so small after so many years.

I feel pretty good about my upgrade path. Why spend a heap of money now? when I could buy i3 now sell it years later and buy 12 threaded devils canyon at a fraction of the price?

You are limited to 4c/8t with socket 1150, I believe.

Your top chip would be the 4790K.
