im not quite sure cause the latest roadmap is for 2004 afaik but i'd say stick it out cause the chipsets are really maturing and prices will go down soon hopefully :)

Buy the 3500 and overclock it to 3800 speeds. For example, I can't afford the 3500+ so I'm just buying a 3200 and overclocking it to ~2.2-2.4 GHz.

I wouldn't bother with the 3800+. Just get the 3200+ Winchester and OC it. It will OC to 2.5 - 2.6 and the 3800+ won't go much, if any, higher.
Reason is heat. All the 3800's are Newcastles which run hotter than the Winchesters. So you won't get as high of an OC on a Newcastle.
If you must wait for the 'bigger" processor, get the 4000+ for only a little more. Same speed but you get 1 MB cache. You won't be able to make that up even when OC'ing.

Ditto. A Winchester-core 3500 or 3200 is virtually guaranteed to reach 3800 speeds, at a bare minimum. Winchesters tend to top out around 2.6-2.7. There's really no reason to pick up a 3800; hell, you could buy TWO 3200s for less than the price of a single 3800, and see which one clocks better!

Actually three. :) (Two 3500+'s also)
The 3800+ needs to drop ALOT to make it worth buying. Unless of course you just plain have alot of money. In that case I would suggest a FX-55.

The A64 PR ratings are much more conservative / realistic than XP ratings.

If your main need for speed is gaming, an A64 3500+ will be much faster than an XP 3700+ would be if it existed -- an A64 3200+ would be about equal to an XP 3700+.
