AMD Expects 33% Processor Market Share in 2-3 Years.

before they can have 33% of the market, they have to have more people than that have a clue what AMD is. i mean, when people think of a processor, they think - INTEL. if fact, some people probably think they are synonyms. in order to get more of the market, they have to do what intel is doing - advertising, advertising, advertising.

Nothing wrong with VIA and SiS chipsets. They are just as stable as the bigger guys out there. It all depends on the motherboard you are getting.

Especially now with the memory controller integrated into the CPUs, its kind of hard to screw up with chipsets.

I hope they can do it. They've made similar goals in the past, but have never quite reached them. Not sure if their Production lines never worked as well as expected, whether they just failed to Sell that many, or whether the PC market grew more than expected, but even though they failed they have been making progress and that's what counts most.

This is doable honestly but AMD needs a lot of money in doing this. This scenario for this to be achieved is:
1. Intel continues to stumble. Even though they have a suprior marketing force out there once they still continue to stumble, then AMD will surely gain. Not just AMD outperform in all benchmarks coz we all know Intel is one of the respectable brand in the world. Bottomline Intel needs not to deliver. (which I think they are now more focus than ever).
2. AMD needs to improve their mobile pocessor. Lets face it, at desktop AMD is the king right now but at mobile, I dont think turion is a formidable competitor. Pentium M is still the beast.
3. AMD needs to be active in all industry consortium. I think with all the investments Intel is making from WiMax, WiFi, cellular, TV handheld UWB, this will surely be the reason why AMD will NOT achieve their goal. For example once WiMax kicks off surely laptop sales will surge and by the time AMD releases its solution for WiMax Intel already cemented their ground.
4. Intel invests a lot even in communication paltfom. From cellular to their IXA processor. Intel is making a huge investments which I think they will reap the benefit in the future.

Bottomline the story right now is not the raw performance gain anymore on the processor but complete solution in the system. Right now how many chipset can support Dual core AMD in the market right now? I can only think of NVidia only.

Yonah and Meram could toss AMDs marketshare goals right out the window.

Its a very volatile industry, there are so many factors that come into play that its impossible to predict market trends more than a few months in advance.

XGI planned on being a market leader by 2007 too 😉

Does AMD have the production capabilities to feed Dell? Whoever supplies to Dell holds a huge percetnage of the market.

Advanced Micro Devices seeks to almost double its market share throughout the next two or three years, its CEO has said in an interview with journalists. Other AMD executives have made even bolder claims and expected the chipmaker?s share to be 50% by 2015.

?There?s no reason why we shouldn?t aspire be a third of the market in the next two or three years,? Hector Ruiz, chairman, president, and CEO of AMD, told InformationWeek recently.

In Q1 2005 AMD commanded 16.9% of the x86 central processing units market, up about 1.9% from the first quarter of 2004 and an increase of 0.3% sequentially, according to market research figures by Mercury Research. Intel?s market share was 81.7% in the first quarter, or down 0.5% compared to the Q4 2004 and 1.8% annually. The remaining 1.4% of the market was shared by chip designers like VIA Technologies and Transmeta Corp.

?We want to be able to provide half the world?s [processing] needs,? claimed Marty Seyer, corporate VP and general manager of AMD?s microprocessor business unit.

For AMD market share increase is not only bound up with sales and marketing efforts, but also involves serious expansion of manufacturing capacities. Currently AMD can produce up to 20 000 200mm wafers per month at its Fab 30 facility in Dresden, Germany. Once AMD launches its Fab 36, located adjacent to the Fab 30, it will be able to manufacture up to 13 000 300mm wafers, which is equivalent to about 29 250 200mm wafers. Furthermore, AMD is working with third-party chipmakers, primarily with Chartered Semiconductor, who use similar process technologies co-developed by IBM, to outsource part of microprocessor production to them.

AMD completed the Fab 36 building in late 2004 and then started installation of the equipment. The maker of microprocessors started qualifications of the factory in in April, 2005. AMD Fab 36 is expected to be in volume production in 2006.

Earlier, AMD's market share target was 25%.

I don't see anything from AMD that would change their existing fate as far as Market share, in fact with Apple turning MACs into just another Intel based PC and brand their share will fall even more.

Maybe if the former MAC Nation devotees that are forced to switch to PC's get AMD Inside machines that would help.

Their only weak point is in the mobile category, as has been mentioned. There is simply no competition between AMD and Intel's Pentium M. Now, before anyone gets riled up, I am not attempting to start a flame war. When Yonah comes out, AMD might as well give up on the mobile department (unless they have some tricks up their sleeves), and concentrate on low cost Desktop chips. This is all speculation, of course, and we cannot make any predictions with any kind of confidence.

I agree with this....Intel builds at least 2 fabs per 1 of AMDs....

I think AMD can gain marketsahre but it will be in highend computers, business class servers, etc...I dont see the desktop market changes much for them period....

Yep whatever AMD do, Intel can always do 1 better. AMD might as well face it, unless some kinda miracle happens and Intel collapses and goes bankrupt then theyre gonna stay the no2 chipmaker.

AMD may make better processors now but that *wont* always be the case. Remember the days when Intel thrashed AMD's althon XP's with the northwood P4? Those days will come again with the Pentium M. Plus! Intel are gonna be supplying apple too, wont help AMD any.

What AMD needs to do is to continue their research and development on thier CPU..... I dont think 2015 will be the right target unless Like I've said Intel is again out of focus. Also they need to be more active in the industry consortia which once something new or the so called "next big thing arrives" Intel leads on this is not that big and AMD can offer some competition. I know they cannot do this since we know that AMD is one company that has so many debt BUT they can always patner which other company. Lastlt and the most important thing is their manufacturing capability should be at par with Intel..... It doesnt necessary mean they match Intel's fab but at least they should at least have a decent yield. This is one Intel is best at

AMD cannot beat Intel by always thinking competition they need also to offer complete solution.... For example once Wimax is out does AMD have an answer? Once Digital media which Intel have been working also does AMD have an outright answer? Once UWB is out does AMD have an answer? plus other *T intel is bragging..... Does AMD have an answer? Allof these are not proprietary since Intel doesn't want it to be...... That is why Intel go with the consortium thing...... Pus their cross agreement.

This I think Intel wil still keep up with their market share.....
