sweet find man, I've been looking for a cpu and comparing prices is so damn difficult with all of the hidden shipping charges. If this is only $5 shipping and this price, I think I'll have to snag it(unless anyone knows of a good shop to buy a pretested overclocked duron for a good price. I only would buy one from a store someone here could highly recommend as having quality customer service). Thx again for the good deal. Maybe I should just get one quick before they're out.

OCZ has a Duron tested at 1 gig for 60, and 950 for 57. It's OEM, but it really doesn't get any better. I ordered mine Monday, and it took them 3 days to ship it, but it's creaping its way across the country now...

OCZ is a bad place, they don't have ANY customer service. I ordered a Duron 600 @ 1000 and a abit KT7, cheap prices on both. But I wanted to change the KT7 to a KT7-RAID and I emailed them, it bounced back. I called and left them numerous messages, not even ONE call back.

But the duron600 o/cs to 1000 just fine as you can see.

Right now I have a celeron 300 and I'm not sure what kind of motherboard. Does anyone know in general if I would probably need to get a new motherboard if I order the AMD?

Thanks!

Ok, so an AMD and Celeron MB are two completely seperate MBs right? So, if I, say, bought a celeron 700, then I probably wouldn't need to change the MB?

Thanks!

Hey2
The Celeron is socket 370 processor, the Duron and Athlon T-Birds are Socket A processors. The difference is also on the MOBO chipset, I am not well versed on Intel chipsets but I would imagine you would need to upgrade to get the most out of your new processor.

The Asus A7V is the MOBO I am using to build my new system. 4, count them FOUR IDE channels for up to 8 IDE/ATAPI devices, two channels ATA100, two channels ATA66/33. It is often compared to the ABIT K7, which has RAID onboard, but only two IDE channels. You can buy a 1 GHZ AMD T-Bird Athlon for around 250 bucks, and the MOBO's run between 130-150 bucks. The Celeron still runs on the 66mhz bus, which is ok but I wanna go faster. And DDR is just around the corner...

If you are into overclocking, the Celeron and Duron chips are an excellent choice, but spend the money and get a Quality board with the features you need first. The prices on MOBO's aren't as Volatile as the CPU market. And Anandtech has an proven record of solid product reviews, so start right here.

This sounds like a great deal but I need advice on
whether to get a duron 650-700 or t-bird 800 is
there much difference. (no overclocking)

tbirds aren't known to overclock that well and the durons can usually overclock to 1 gig
but they're both so cheap these days that it's really the user's discretion...it just depends what kind of programs you're running and so forth

T-birds overclock as well as Duron or even higher if you get Euro-cores.

The difference is that Duron is way cheaper and better value for $.

After $10 shipping, it's not that great. Onvia is $76 shipped for 700Mhz although of course they are out of stock.

For only $10 more, I would definately buy retail.

$10 includes
- 3 year vs 30 day warranty
- Heatsink & Fan
- Free tech support from AMD (though I don't know if it means much)
- Nice box
- AMD badge
- It's easier to sell later on
- You are getting a virgin, nobody has ever touched chip

I think it's well worth paying $10.

Hey2 - Actually if you have a celeron 300 right now you probably can't upgrade to a much faster speed celeron. Motherboards can only handle certain processor speeds. Yours likely won't go any higher than 500 mhz. Check your motherboard manual.

My suggestion is the same as everyone else's, make the big upgrade to a duron or tbird processor. They aren't crippled like the celerons (i.e. the new 800mhz celeron even with a 100mhz front side bus still barely matches the performance of a 600mhz duron)..and AMD's processors are about half the price.

Hey this site has a store that is only a couple miles from me. I heard the store was expensive. I will have to check it out.
