AMD Dual Core Query...

1. Isn't AMD's Dual Core CPU - > the AMD X2 ?
2. Is it based on x64 Architecture ?
3. Whats the socket for the X2? AM2 -> which is 940 pin?? OR Anything else also?
4. Does AMD X2 come in two pin configs ?

No difference between am2 and s939. Am2+ will be compatible with the newer AMD cpu's though, like agena/phenom.

Not sure about 1207.

939 supports DDR, AM2 supports DDR2.... AN2 is best because DDR2 is cheap and DDR isn't. 939 support is also being discontinued.
1207 is the FX platform which is for dual processor support.

well yeah it does support ddr 2, but theres no difference in processor performance between both sockets.

940 is a server socket I think, and is not used in mainstream consumer solutions.

yea there is a difference between S940 and Socket AM2. AM2 is used for consumer desktops and 940 is mainly for Opterons running in servers.

yes, but aren't am2 and s940 interchangeable? I mean, I know that s940 is more server-oriented, but you could put a 4600+ am2 processor into a s940 board iirc.

as far as i know you cant since the pins do different things on both of them.

:thumbsup: Correct. Socket 940 is for workstation/server Opterons, allows multi-processor set-ups and DDR EC memory. Socket AM2 is consumer platform for DDR2-compatible A64/X2 processors. Same number of pins, but different layout, i.e. non-compatible.

Say I get an AMD X2 (AM2) @ 2GHZ,
1) It essentially means 2 cores @ 2GHZ each?
2) It also means I won't be theoretically getting (2*2) 4GHZ @ any point of time.... And Dual Core is only utilised when one core is maxed out?

No...both cores in the X2 processor are operating. You don't have to max out one before the other starts working.

Having said that...this issue can be an operating system issue. An OS theoretically could (by design or by an OOPS!) assign tasks to one core while starving the other. Generally, though, an OS distributes work across available processors fairly evenly.
