I am in the market (immediate) for a new cpu for my MSI motherboard (slotA) and am unsure as to what cpu to purchase. The thunderbird cpu's are cheaper but have only 256kd on the cpu, while the standard athlons are a little more but have 512kb on-chip. Should I purhcase a 900mhz tbird or say an 800mhz standard slotA athlon cpu (which both cost roughly the same. I am wondering which will perform better in the long run for me.

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the t-bird better because the cache runs at full speed, not 1/3 like the regular athlon?
 
Stick with the classic if your motherboard is a VIA based board. The Thunderbirds DO NOT run very well and have huge limitations on the VIA boards. The 800 classic should overclock well anyway. And Micron is correct, the Tbird is a better chip beacause the cache does run at full speed while the the 800 classic's cache only runs at 1/3 speed

You might want to also check out any reviews of the T-Bird core Athlons. 256Kb of On-Die L2 cache at full speed blows right past the 512Kb Off-Die L2 cache Athlons at 1/2 to even 1/3 cache speeds in terms of clock for clock performance.
 
You could get a Duron real cheap and switch to a Socket A board. Overclock to 1GHz to get roughly the same performance and then be able to upgrade later to the AXIA for 1500MHz or so.
