AMD Denies Phase Out Opteron Socket 939

I thought the rumer was that AMD will stop selling socket 939 Opterons to some suppliers. This would seem very likely, why would they make it easy to buy a cheaper 939 Opteron that cuts into A64 sales? When they first came out the 160 (or 165s?) were about $50 cheaper then a similar x2 3800+

I have never heard that they would stop making them, just that they were going to sell them to people like HP rather then see them sold on the open market for a lower price then normal A64 939 chips.

Notice, the link only said that they will continue making them, not that they won't stop making them easy for people buy.

Exactly. Unfortunately this isn't really telling us anything new.

do you really think the enthusiast market threatened X2 sales(or eroded them to any significant degree)..no way(if so show me a proof)...average buyer would not even consider Opteron

I really believe this was pure hype

That's honestly what I believe. I mean yes, the enthusiast market is rather big, or so it seems but compared to the rest of the world, I highly doubt we put such a big dent in the Opteron purchases world-wide.

All this story says is that Socket 939 Opterons will continue to be produced which, AFAIK, was never in question. The real issue is that rumor says AMD will be restricting Opteron sales to only those companies who will be putting them in servers and workstations.

I am so happy. Now I dont have to worry about not being able to get one in time...I only hope that its not just system builders they would be selling it to.

I wonder is Monarch will still be able to get them since they actually build machines.

...and we will adjust production volumes as needed to supply our server and workstation customers

That doesn't really tell us anything. The rumors were that they would stop selling them in the retail market, not that they would stop selling them to the workstation and server builders.

Incorrect, the ORIGINAL rumor (which they never commented on) was that retail market was going byebye
Then a certain UK zine had to go and imbelish it and MISTATE that the entire line was going out of production for a possible early arrival of M2.
This is what AMD commented on as not doing so would HURT ALL sales if they allowed the public to believe M2 was litterally just around the corner a few weeks away.

this isnt really good news. "we will adjust production volumes as needed to supply our server and workstation customers" means that they will make WAY less than they did on release, so only server and workstation people can buy them, not desktop users. they dont want the chips to be used for desktops, and for crazy overclockers like you guys.

Some online stores in collusion to jack up the price and rip you off.
US Attorney General will conduct an investigation.

Even if Monarch still got the chips they would probably still have to follow an eula which will probably restrict the sale to us regular people or face a giganto lawsuit.
