interesting it said target high end market first...Does oit mean FX lines, or FX and X2 lines with regular A64s to stay sckt 939???

Thanks...i thik it may be a little out of date..I dont see them setting out 3500+ chips in M2 and/or it being consdiered high end market.....I would definitely like to seee some 5000+ XC2's though I dont think numbering convention they have used sooo far would make a Toldeo core 2.6ghz a 5000+...should be a 5200+...FX59 would be a nice milestone to see AMD hit though....

Definitely a little out of date. I don't imagine you'll get an answer until AMD release an updated roadmap ... unless we can get some info from someone in the know. In my opinion I don't see why AMD would only target the high end market with M2, although it would make sense if the performance gains using their lower end CPUs was minimal from 939, which may well be the case from what i've read.

I think when they say "high end M2 market" they mean M2 A64's & X2's & FX's. There will probly be M2 Sempron's (or some form of them), so that would be the budget sector. If I had to guess it will go:
Budget: Sempron
Mainstream: Lower A64's
High end: High A64's, X2, FX

i think the road map stated that the FX59 would be a dual core flavour, although i thought AMD would go for the 3Ghz on a single SD core.

I would consider single core non-FX line as middle market and the semprons as low end budget stuff......


The FX59 is stated as a San Diego core, so therefore single core....

i dont get the difference between the M2 Opteron and M2 Athlon, because the M2 Opteron is going to have 1200 pins, and the M2 Athlon is going to have 940 pins. now if they both support DDR2 as the only major change, with the exception of the opteron supporting registered memory, how can the pin outs differ so much?

I mean as the memory controller is on die, the memory tracers from the DIMM slots to the two individual memory controllers would increase due to more pin outs on the DDR2 dimms, thus resulting in more pins needed on the pin grid array right?

then what is the difference between the two. with regards to the amount of pins, is there some other big difference being implemented into the Opterons being a Server based chip?

And the other changes to the CPU as in the new features like ?Pacifica Virtualization?, isnt that just changes to the CPU's logic?

Gosh, I'm glad I got my 3400+ 2.4 GHz on sale. I mean, they say the socket M2 will first be targeted to higher end users (i.e. high price). I almost forgot they do that with new products.

socket M2 next year is not going to be anything to rave about it is just a buffer period in which AMD can adopt DDR2 for the mainstream product line, and prepare itself for 65nm. I guess this will give them time to sort out any issues with the mem controller supporting the new DDR2, and any deficiencies can then be ironed out for the 65nm process, kind of like the difference between REV-e and REV-d, aka San Diego and Venice cores supporting 4 dimms at DDR400, unlike the Winchester on the 90nm which would revert to DDR333.
