clearing out for Bulldozer!

A bit early for that isn't it ? I mean BD is still a year away.

This seems more like they improved yields, so they can afford to drop prices to stay competitive.

Nah, I think this is clearing the way for another speed bump. The Phenom II 970 is rumored to appear in Sept.

people still buy quads? err, maybe they don't and that is why AMD is dropping prices.

Me thinks you either need/want the cores so you go with thuban or an i7...or you don't really need/want them and so you go with an X2 or i3.

People still buy whatever HP, Dell etc tell them to buy, at least for the bulk of the market. As long as the quad cores are cheaper than the hex cores, their will be a market for them. Budget = dual core, mid range = quad and high end = hex. At least thats the way marketing is set up anyways.

If I could get a quad core with higher clocks in a lower thermal envelope compared to a hex core I would, but at least right now, the hex core are so close to the quad cores in power and clock speeds and price, it does seem a bit questionable at least on the AMD side.

I'd really like to get a native X4 in the E0 stepping. Don't get me wrong, the current (965 & 955) C3 stepping is nice and definitely improves on the hotter C2 (940) which had less OC headroom too, but my current computer is going to become a HTPC box once I build a new one in a year or two. (with the 4870 pulled in order to get it in a slim case obviously) And for HTPC boxes quiet cooling is important, and the E0 runs with a lot less voltage at a given speed than the C3 does.
