I've been out of the loop for a while.....

What may be the reasons why a certain Athlon XP 2800+ will work on certain boards and fail to work on other boards (nForce2 chipset boards, to be specific)? And how would I be able to tell the difference (whether it will work or not)?

Thanks in advanced,

All nForce2 boards should support both types of 2800+'s (Thoroughbred and Barton), given a decent high-quality power supply and memory. Are you or a friend having problems with a 2800+ on nForce2?

athlon xp 2800 will work on nForce2 boards..

the issue with the 2800 or any fsb 333 processor is the ability of it to hit passed the 200 mhz fsb mark...

THAT is the issue...

if you run it at default speed 13x(?) 166 then it will run

in order to get it to run passed the 200 mark, you have to cut the 3rd L12 bridge if i'm correct...

Are you only talking about nForce2 chipsets? Like, it works on an Epox 8RDA but not an Asus A7N8X??? Or are you saying it works on an nForce2 board, but not on a board with a Via chipset?

If you're asking a hypothetical question, it's going to be difficult to get an answer... if you're actually having a problem, please be more specific about the problem... tell us what hardware you have, bios version, etc.

The other way round, actually - it works on the A7N8X but doesn't work on two other boards: a Soltek SL-75MRNL (nForce2) and Gigabyte GA-7VAXP (VIA KT400). So is it a Thoroughbred/Barton issue then?

Thanks,

P.S. On the two boards mentioned above, the boards wouldn't even power up (or powered up for a split second and then shut down again) despite jumper tweaking....

However, they do work fine on a 2400+ CPU.

EDIT: More information:
CPU - Athlon XP 2800+
Mem - Kingston 256MB PC2100
Vid - GeForce4 MX 420 64MB

Maybe those boards have an older BIOS that doesn't know what an XP2800 is, and it gives it the wrong voltage or somethin. The XP2800 is a 333 Mhz FSB chip... maybe those other boards don't like 333 Mhz buses.

I guess it could be the 333Mhz... I just had a similar trouble with a Magic Pro K7N UltraS board too until I tweaked the jumpers and manually set the FSB. Now it's running properly on that board.

Thanks for the info/help, everyone.
