amd cpu cooked?

I have a AMD 1400 cpu. It is overclocked but don't know if it is overclocked to 1400. But the cpu fan was like a jet plane, so I bought a thermaltake 7+, installed artic silver and booted it up. It was running and I guess about 10 seconds into it I switched the fan from high to med. and then back to high. The whole pc just shut off. I had the bios set to shut it down at 70c. So I look at the thermal paste spread and find I skimped a little,(not all the way covered) so I clean it up and redo the spread and when it boots up I get no beep or video. It just sits there and runs but that is it. Did I cook that cpu that fast? Any way to trouble shoot? thanks

Maybe this is a stupid question and I'm sure you know about it. I've only read about it, but never spread on paste, but did you cover the whole CPU or just the right particular parts?

parts ? theres only one part to apply paste to.

about your cpu, i would clean off all the paste and look for any visible damage (chipped parts), or burn marks.

You might have blown the PSU. Did you manually make the rheostat to adjust the speed of the fan or it was included with the HSF??

If not the PSU, some parts in the pc might be damaged. I doubt the CPU is dead though.

Well, I went out and bought a new cpu amd 1800+ fired right up! The bios detects it as only a 1600+. I tried several default settings and no go. I have a GA-7dxr Gigabyte MB. bios version F9. Can't figure why it only reads 1600+. Checked that other cpu and no visible damage. I'm just afraid to put it in another computer.

Was reading another thread and set the core volts to 1.75 and thefsb to 145 and now the bios sees it as an 1800+. Temp running right around 51c Wonder what I did?
